Chapter 22 - The Whisper

Years later they finally learned who whispered:

“You just struck the wrong soldier.”

Cadet Marcus Hale, standing three rows back.

He had previously been shoved by Julian.

He recognized Mara’s calm demeanor? He didn’t know identity.

Why say?

He meant Julian picked someone who might fight back?

Actually Marcus said:

“I didn’t know who you were.”

Mara:

“Then why wrong soldier?”

“Because you had been watching everyone for eleven days.”

“You moved like cadre.”

“I figured you weren’t trainee.”

Mara laughed.

Marcus had simply noticed.

Then:

“I was also angry.”

Julian had hurt him and faced no consequence.

It continued scholarships blind to donor.

Julian declined seat.

Victor eventually stepped away permanently.

Money can still do good without access to outcomes.

Then Victor wrote public essay accepting parts.

Not self-exoneration.

He admitted:

“I mistook access for stewardship and intervention for fatherhood.”

Some criticized too late.

True.

Mara did not comment.

Then Evan read.

“Do you believe?”

“Maybe.”

“Does matter?”

May you like

“For him.”

They moved on.
