Chapter 15 - What Julian Lost

Julian lost father’s approval before he lost money.

Victor refused visits initially.

Then sent one message through lawyer:

You could have protected family.

Julian read.

Then deleted copy? Keep.

He replied:

Truth should have protected family.

No response.

Elise watched.

“You sound older.”

“I feel tired.”

“Same.”

Then Julian’s old friend circles vanished.

Some thought traitor.

Some thought abusive rich kid.

Both flattened.

He started warehouse logistics job at nonprofit supporting military families.

Not as punishment.

Because they were willing hire after full disclosure.

Supervisor, Marcus Hale—the cadet he shoved? Could be too neat. Avoid. Supervisor Derek Collins.

Derek said:

“I read news.”

Julian:

“Then why hire?”

“Job is inventory.”

“Can you do inventory?”

“Yes.”

“Can you follow rules?”

“I’m learning.”

“Then show.”

No moral theater.

Julian worked.

He made mistakes.

No one cared father.

That was both painful and freeing.

Then he attended mandated accountability program.

He learned difference anger and entitlement.

We need avoid therapeutic detail too much.

He wrote apologies to three people.

Only one replied.

Sofia Reyes:

I don’t forgive yet. I’m glad record is corrected. Do not contact again.

Julian respected.

That itself growth.

Then Noah Bennett, recruit witness, ran into him.

Awkward.

Noah:

“You okay?”

Julian laughed.

“Why would you care?”

“Because we trained together.”

Julian:

“I was awful.”

“Sometimes.”

“Thanks.”

Noah:

“You were also good at land navigation.”

People not one thing.

Then Julian asked:

“Would you ever trust me?”

Noah:

“Not yet.”

Honest.

Then no friendship forced.

Meanwhile Mara received formal commendation for IG work.

She declined public ceremony? Maybe accepts closed.

Evan teased:

“You hate applause.”

“Yes.”

Then he asked:

“Do you plan retire?”

“Not yet.”

“Of course.”

Their relationship improved enough to argue.

Mara visited Tacoma monthly.

Evan no longer calls her Colonel.

Then Thomas Vance’s notebook entered family archive, not public except relevant evidence.

They decided together.

No one uses father as saint.

Then one day Julian emailed Mara through approved channel:

Do you regret smiling after I hit you?

She was surprised.

Reply:

No.

He:

Why did you smile?

Mara considered.

Because I had spent eleven days wondering whether the system would reveal itself. You made it reveal itself in five seconds.

Julian sat with that.

He had triggered his own consequences.

Then she added:

The smile was not because I knew who I was. It was because I knew there were four hundred witnesses.

That mattered.

Not secret rank.

Community.

Then Julian wrote:

I thought nobody would speak because of my father.

Mara:

So did several of them. They spoke anyway.

His deepest loss was not career.

It was belief power could always control witnesses.

Then Victor sentencing.

Judge considered age, record, service to defense industry, seriousness.

Substantial prison term plus fines and debarment from federal contracting leadership for set period/lifetime depending. Let's say eight-year federal sentence and restitution/penalties; may be plausible. We can keep "multi-year federal sentence". User likes consequences. Use 9 years? Procurement fraud/obstruction serious. Let's say seven years.

Victor spoke:

“I accept jury but maintain some actions misunderstood.”

No full confession.

Julian visited afterward with approval.

Glass partition? Could be pre-transfer. They meet in detention visit room.

Victor:

“You look thin.”

Julian:

“I work nights.”

“Come back to family office.”

“I can’t.”

“I can arrange.”

Julian laughed softly.

“There.”

“What?”

“You’re doing it again.”

Victor stopped.

Then Julian said:

“I love you.”

Victor looked.

“But I won’t let you fix this.”

The first true boundary.

Victor cried.

May you like

Not absolution.

Family.
