Chapter 20 - Mara Leaves the Inspector General

Mara’s final IG assignment ended five years after Blackridge incident.
She had spent career correcting records.
Now she wanted different.
Evan asked:
“Retire?”
“Maybe.”
“You hate maybe.”
“I’m learning.”
She accepted temporary faculty role in military ethics and systems accountability.
No undercover.
No secret tattoos required.
Rourke, now retired, guest lectured on oversight failure.
They argued often.
Students benefited.
Tessa remained investigator.
Harper later promoted.
Blackridge continued.
Then Mara wrote one case study:
When Influence Becomes Infrastructure.
No real names in training version.
It explained how corruption can emerge without explicit bribe:
donor expectations.
career incentives.
informal corrections.
credential sharing.
fear of losing funding.
deference.
Julian read public adaptation.
He emailed:
“You made us boring.”
Mara:
“That’s how lessons survive.”
Then Mara and Evan co-taught one engineering session.
At beginning, Evan said:
“I was framed here.”
Students froze.
Then:
“That’s not reason to distrust all records.”
“It is reason to preserve raw data and challenge through more than one channel.”
Mara looked proud.
Afterward Evan said:
“Don’t.”
“What?”
“Proud face.”
“Can’t help.”
“Control issue.”
They laughed.
Family healed enough for teasing.
Then Thomas Vance archive went to military history collection with restricted sensitive content and full family consent.
No hidden notebook at home.
They kept one photograph:
Mara and Evan as children with father fixing bicycle.
Not uniform.
Then Mara visited mother? We never introduced. Could be deceased or alive. Avoid.
Then Victor eligible for release? Five years later maybe still serving seven-year. He had two years.
Julian visited.
Victor had gray hair, less force.
He asked:
“You happy?”
Julian:
“Sometimes.”
“Successful?”
“I’m employed.”
Victor laughed.
Then:
“I’m sorry I made you believe being protected was same as being loved.”
Julian went silent.
That was sentence needed.
“I know you loved me.”
Victor:
“Badly sometimes.”
“Yes.”
They both cried.
Not full redemption.
Then Victor said:
“Mara Vance?”
“What?”
“Did she forgive?”
Julian smiled.
“She refused to issue certificate.”
Victor laughed.
“That sounds like her.”
Humanity.
Then Victor:
“Tell her…”
Julian stopped.
“No.”
“What?”
“If you want tell her, write yourself.”
Boundary.
May you like
Victor nodded.
Growth in both.
