Chapter 22 - Judge Mercer’s Reprimand

The Judicial Council released its decision.
Judge Adrian Mercer had not ordered St. Jude’s to protect Bryce.
No evidence showed he knew about the financial diversion before the scandal.
But his calls to university leadership concerning his son created an improper appearance that judicial prestige could influence private disciplinary matters.
Public reprimand.
Recusal requirements.
Mandatory ethics counseling.
Bryce called him after.
“You could appeal.”
Adrian answered:
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the finding is fair.”
His son went silent.
Then:
“Does that mean I ruined your career?”
“No.”
Adrian looked out his chambers window.
“It means I made my own choices.”
That answer was the opposite of how Bryce had been raised.
