Chapter 17 - Lieutenant Rusk

Graham Rusk lost his campus-police command.

The external review found he had violated confidentiality rules by accepting Leo’s complaint from Bryce and failed to intervene promptly during escalating harassment.

The firearm issue was more complicated.

Video showed Rusk drew after I physically restrained Bryce.

He did not point directly at me.

He issued commands.

Given an armed unknown adult restraining a student, some aspects could be understandable.

But he already knew who I was.

Grant’s message named me.

Bryce had told him I was a Marshal.

Rusk failed to identify himself before approaching.

He positioned himself as a private protector for Bryce rather than a neutral officer.

The university terminated him.

State authorities reviewed potential official misconduct and privacy violations.

He ultimately entered a negotiated disposition on narrower charges related to unauthorized access and misuse of confidential student information.

No attempted-murder fantasy.

No secret assassin.

The truth was more believable.

He had confused donor influence with legitimate instruction.

He thought “keep Bryce safe” meant Bryce deserved special policing.

That was enough to end a career.
