Chapter 20 - Bryce Comes Back to the Fountain

Bryce returned to campus only once before transferring.
To collect belongings under supervision.
He asked to speak with Leo.
Leo said no.
That should have ended it.
It did.
For the first time, somebody respected Leo’s no without asking him to justify it.
Bryce left a written apology with the student conduct office.
Leo did not read it for three weeks.
When he did, he handed it to me.
“Want my opinion?”
“No.”
Progress.
The letter said Bryce had spent his life confusing access with worth.
That he believed family donations made St. Jude’s partly his.
That scholarship students existed because families like his allowed them to.
He admitted the fountain was designed to make Leo look weak and me look violent.
He did not ask forgiveness.
Good.
Leo folded the letter.
“What will you do with it?” I asked.
May you like
“Nothing.”
Sometimes nothing was a choice.
