Chapter 13 - President Caldwell

Martin Caldwell resigned.

The board report was devastating.

He did not steal Access Forward money personally.

Important.

But he approved accounting transfers that treated restricted accessibility funds as flexible capital.

He allowed donor considerations to influence student-discipline decisions.

He failed to disclose Grant Mercer’s vendor conflict after finance staff raised it.

And after Leo’s complaint, he approved a strategy memo:

Avoid escalation while capital campaign is vulnerable.

No order to bully Leo.

No order to destroy a hearing aid.

Institutions rarely wrote evil in complete sentences.

They wrote “avoid escalation.”

“Reputational management.”

“Stakeholder sensitivity.”

Then people lower down understood which problems were inconvenient.

Caldwell’s resignation did not fix St. Jude’s.

It simply removed one person who had trained the institution to prefer quiet over fairness.

The board appointed an interim president from outside.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

Former public-university provost.

First meeting:

She froze the stadium campaign.

Donors complained.

She replied:

“We will resume fundraising when we can explain where existing restricted money went.”

Simple.

Grant Mercer’s foundation pledge was suspended.

Not because all Mercer philanthropy was corrupt.

Because unresolved conflicts required distance.

The football program lost planned upgrades.

Players blamed Leo.

For about two days.

Then Coach Hill held a team meeting.

“If your first reaction to a deaf student being assaulted is to complain about a recovery room we may not build, transfer.”

May you like

Nobody did.

Culture required adults saying clear things.
