Chapter 27 - Victor and Trent

Victor finally apologized without talking about money.

They sat in a therapist’s office.

“I made your basketball feel like my investment.”

Trent stared.

Victor continued.

“I used ninety-six thousand dollars like a threat.”

“Yes.”

“I told myself pressure made you stronger.”

“It made me scared.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No.”

Trent shook his head.

“You know now.”

Victor accepted it.

“Now.”

Trent looked at him.

“I became you in that hallway.”

Victor closed his eyes.

Trent continued.

“I thought Elias being hurt solved my problem.”

Victor whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

Trent’s voice hardened.

“Don’t apologize because you feel guilty.”

Victor nodded.

“Then why?”

“So you stop.”

The therapist smiled slightly.

Boundaries again.

Victor began learning that fatherhood could not be measured by access, money, or outcomes.

Slowly.

May you like

Imperfectly.
