Chapter 13 - Elias Returns to the Court

Elias’s first adaptive drill lasted twelve minutes.
No defenders.
No contact.
He dribbled from sideline to sideline at controlled speed.
Then stationary passing.
Then form shooting.
His first shot missed.
Badly.
The ball struck the side of the rim.
Teammates pretended not to react.
Elias laughed.
“Beautiful.”
Coach Harper smiled.
“NBA ready.”
Second shot.
Short.
Third.
In.
No applause.
He had asked for none.
At minute eleven, his knee felt tired.
Old Elias would have pushed.
New Elias stopped.
“I’m done.”
Harper nodded.
“Good.”
That single word hit him.
Good.
Stopping.
Good.
Leah checked him.
Everything okay.
He sat on the bench with ice according to his rehab routine.
Chase came over.
“Can I say something?”
Elias looked suspicious.
“Depends.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For laughing?”
“Yes.”
Elias nodded.
Chase continued.
“And for acting like Trent being captain meant he could decide stuff.”
“Okay.”
“You hate me?”
“No.”
“Cool.”
“That doesn’t mean we’re good.”
Chase looked down.
“Yeah.”
Elias appreciated that he did not demand a faster resolution.
Marcus apologized later.
Others followed.
Some sincere.
Some awkward.
Team culture shifted through small moments.
No one became perfect.
Then Elias received an email from a college assistant coach.
Not an offer.
A check-in.
We’re aware of your recovery. Focus on health. We can evaluate later.
Elias read it three times.
The scout did not disappear because he used a crutch.
That undermined one of Trent’s biggest fears.
Maybe recovery did not automatically erase possibility.
Elias forwarded the email to Maria.
She replied:
Proud of your knee. More proud you stopped at 12 minutes.
He smiled.
Then another email arrived.
Anonymous.
Subject:
You still don’t know why Hale wanted the August report gone.
Attachment:
District insurance correspondence.
Elias opened it.
One line highlighted:
Potential personal liability exposure if facility use involved undisclosed compensation to district employee.
Hale’s $25,000 payment.
If the school acknowledged the workout as district-related, Hale’s private payment could become central.
He had not only protected the program.
He protected himself.
That made the cover-up more intentional.
Elias forwarded it to Whitmore.
No detective work.
No vigilante investigation.
He had learned enough.
