Chapter 21 - The Settlement

Major conflicts began resolving.

The Moreno family entered mediation with the district and insurers.

The settlement covered unreimbursed medical expenses, future physical therapy related to the injury, attorney fees, and an additional negotiated amount reflecting the district’s failures.

Not life-changing millions.

Meaningful.

Maria used part to reduce debt from missed work and medical costs.

The rest went into an education account for Elias.

He complained.

“I could buy a car.”

“You could buy three months of insurance on a car.”

He laughed.

The district also issued a formal public statement acknowledging the unauthorized workout and inaccurate initial reporting.

No naming minors.

No sensational blame.

Coach Miller’s resignation became final.

Hale’s employment ended.

Booster reforms implemented.

The August record corrected.

For Maria, that mattered most.

For Elias, something else did.

The district removed a notation from his file suggesting he had participated against coaching advice.

He had carried blame on paper.

Now it was gone.

One line.

Years later, nobody reading his athletic history would see a lie.

That felt like justice.
