Chapter 25 - Trent Loses a Game

District semifinal.
Ridgeway down two.
Trent had the ball.
Final seconds.
Old Trent would have forced a shot.
A scout was present.
His father was not.
Elias watched from the student section.
Trent drove.
Defense collapsed.
Chase stood open.
Trent passed.
Chase missed.
Ridgeway lost.
The gym groaned.
Trent stood at half court.
For one second, Elias expected rage.
Instead Trent walked to Chase.
Tapped his shoulder.
“Good shot.”
It wasn’t.
That was not the point.
Afterward, a reporter asked Trent why he passed.
“Because he was open.”
“Did you think about taking the shot yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Regret passing?”
Trent looked toward the locker room.
“No.”
Simple.
Not redemption.
Evidence of change.
Victor watched the interview from home.
He cried quietly.
Because his son had made the choice Victor spent years teaching him not to make.
