Chapter 12 - The Conduct Hearing

Trent’s student conduct hearing happened privately.
Not in front of teammates.
Not livestreamed.
He had rights.
His parents attended.
So did a district administrator.
Evidence included videos, witness statements, prior reports, and Trent’s own account.
He admitted kicking the crutch.
Admitted shoving Elias.
Admitted repeated comments.
Denied intending serious physical harm.
The videos supported that distinction.
He wanted humiliation.
That was bad enough.
The district suspended Trent from competition for six weeks and removed him from leadership for the remainder of the school year.
He could attend classes.
Participate later under conditions.
Required counseling.
Restorative process only if Elias voluntarily agreed.
Elias did not.
Not yet.
Victor called the punishment excessive.
Laura disagreed.
Trent said nothing.
College recruiters heard.
One withdrew.
Another paused.
Pinnacle Pathways warned Victor their services could not guarantee outcomes.
Victor exploded.
Laura took the contract from him.
Read it.
Then showed Trent.
“No repayment clause.”
He stared.
“What?”
“You do not owe your father ninety-six thousand dollars if you don’t get a scholarship.”
Trent grabbed the pages.
Read.
Again.
Nothing.
The financial weight he had carried was invented.
Victor had used sunk cost as pressure.
Trent went upstairs.
Locked his door.
Then punched his pillow until exhaustion took over.
Not walls.
Not people.
Just something soft.
He cried afterward.
Not because he lost basketball.
Because he realized his father had been turning fear into performance for years.
The realization did not make Elias’s suffering disappear.
It only showed Trent where he learned the language.
May you like
He would still have to choose whether to keep speaking it.
