Chapter 24 - Elias Runs

Nine months after surgery, Elias ran unrestricted for the first time.
Not in a game.
Not before scouts.
On the outdoor track.
Leah timed nothing.
Maria watched from the fence.
Coach Harper stood far away.
Elias jogged one lap.
Then another.
His knee held.
His breathing became heavier.
Not fear.
Effort.
He stopped after the planned distance.
Maria clapped once.
He pointed.
“No dramatic mom stuff.”
She clapped louder.
He laughed.
Later that week, full basketball progression began.
Controlled contact.
Then scrimmage minutes.
First time someone bumped his right side, Elias froze.
Leah noticed.
“Pain?”
“No.”
“Fear?”
He hated the word.
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
He resumed later.
Recovery included trust.

Not only tissue.
