Chapter 6 - The Deed

Samuel searched his house that night.

His wife had kept every important document in an old wooden chest.

He opened it.

There was the original land deed.

Tax receipts.

Survey maps.

And one letter from Samuel's father.

Samuel had not read it in years.

The letter mentioned the eastern spring.

His father had known.

But there was another document.

A handwritten agreement between Samuel's father and an Apache family.

It granted shared access to the spring during drought years.

Samuel stared at it.

The agreement had no official government seal.

But it had signatures.

Names.

Dates.

And a promise.

Samuel's father had written:

No man should die because another man owns the paper above the water.

Samuel sat quietly.

His father had understood the danger decades earlier.

Then Samuel noticed something else.

A recent mark had been made on the back of the document.

A pencil note.

VOID — PROPERTY CONSOLIDATION.

Samuel's blood ran cold.

Someone had entered his house.

Someone had examined the deed.

Someone was trying to erase the old agreement.

And that person had access to his private documents.
