Chapter 26 - Red Willow’s Lesson

One evening, Samuel and Red Willow sat beside the spring.

Samuel asked:

"How did you know Mercer was coming?"

Red Willow smiled.

"We saw his tracks."

"Before I did?"

"You were looking for riders."

"What were you looking for?"

"Changes."

Samuel considered that.

Red Willow pointed toward the ground.

"Broken grass."

Then toward the ridge.

"Birds leaving."

Then toward the trees.

"Silence."

Samuel smiled.

"You saved my life."

Red Willow shook his head.

"You fed our children."

Samuel laughed.

"So we're even?"

"No."

Red Willow smiled.

"Now we are friends."
