Chapter 18 - Fire at the Spring

Samuel and Red Willow raced toward the pasture.

The fire burned around the survey markers.

Samuel saw a man running.

Rourke.

He was carrying a metal box.

Samuel chased him.

Rourke stopped near the spring.

"You don't understand what you're protecting."

Samuel raised his rifle.

"I understand exactly."

Rourke laughed.

"You think this land makes you rich?"

"No."

"It could make you powerful."

"I don't want power."

Rourke looked genuinely confused.

"Then you're a fool."

Samuel stepped closer.

"I want my home."

Rourke opened the box.

Inside were forged deeds.

He had planned to destroy them.

But Red Willow had already found something else.

A second witness.

Rourke's former bookkeeper.
