Chapter 11 - His Father’s Secret

Samuel spent the next day reading his father's letters.

The truth emerged slowly.

Nathaniel Carter had once worked as a survey assistant.

He had discovered that several businessmen were attempting to acquire water sources before the railroad arrived.

He refused to cooperate.

Then he disappeared from public life.

He bought the ranch.

He protected the spring.

He made the agreement with the Apache families.

Samuel had always believed his father simply wanted a quiet life.

He had been wrong.

His father had been protecting something.

At the bottom of one letter was a sentence:

If they cannot buy the land, they will manufacture ownership.

Samuel read it twice.

Then he found another letter.

This one had never been mailed.

It was addressed to Sheriff Bell.

Samuel's father had written:

You know who is behind this. If I disappear, protect my son.

Samuel's hands began shaking.

His father had feared someone.

And that person might still be alive.
