Chapter 9 - Adrian Before VanessaDaniel stared at the photograph.

Claire and Adrian stood outside a coffee shop.

They were not touching.

There was nothing romantic about the image.

But Claire’s message changed its meaning.

“He was mine first.”

Lily looked at her father.

“Did Mom know Adrian before you did?”

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“Not that I knew.”

Detective Ruiz examined the back.

“The handwriting matches Claire’s notes.”

Martin searched the scattered storage papers.

Most had been removed.

Whoever emptied the unit had worked quickly.

But haste created mistakes.

A torn envelope remained beneath a box.

The return address belonged to a law firm in Baltimore.

Inside was half a letter.

Martin read the surviving portion.

“…your concerns regarding Mr. Cole appear credible. However, without documentation establishing that he knowingly misrepresented his role in the Beaumont transaction…”

The page ended.

Daniel frowned.

“Beaumont?”

Rachel searched company records remotely.

Mercer Development had never had a Beaumont project.

Martin searched Claire’s maiden name.

Claire Beaumont.

Daniel looked stunned.

Claire’s family had owned a small development company before she married him.

Lily knew almost nothing about it.

Claire’s father had died when Lily was a baby.

Her grandmother had died earlier.

Daniel said:

“Claire sold the family company before we married.”

“Who bought it?” Ruiz asked.

Daniel didn’t know.

Rachel found old corporate filings.

Beaumont Residential Partners had been sold twelve years earlier after a financial crisis.

The purchaser was Northbridge Capital.

Not Northbridge Asset Partners.

But the mailing address matched an early company linked to Adrian.

Lily understood first.

“Adrian knew Mom because he bought her family’s company.”

Martin corrected gently.

“Possibly helped buy it.”

They needed records.

Old court filings revealed that Beaumont Residential collapsed after several lenders called loans unexpectedly.

Claire had personally guaranteed part of the debt.

She sold the company at a steep loss to avoid bankruptcy.

Months later, Northbridge resold several Beaumont assets for almost triple the purchase price.

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Claire never told me.”

“Maybe she didn’t know,” Ruiz said.

Martin found another filing.

A consultant who worked for Beaumont before the collapse had provided financial projections to lenders.

Name:

Adrian Cole.

Rachel whispered:

“He helped weaken the company, then helped buy it.”

Ruiz raised a cautioning hand.

“That is a theory.”

But it fit.

Claire had investigated Adrian because she knew him from the destruction of her family business.

Then, years later, Adrian entered Daniel’s company through Vanessa.

Coincidence became difficult to believe.

Lily asked the question everyone avoided.

“How did Vanessa meet him?”

Records gave no answer.

But the storage unit offered another clue.

Behind a damaged filing cabinet, Ruiz found a business card.

Vanessa Hart

Client Relations

Beaumont Residential Partners

Daniel stopped breathing.

Hart was Vanessa’s maiden name.

“She worked for Claire.”

Lily felt the floor tilt beneath her.

Vanessa had not simply been Claire’s friend.

She had been her employee.

Daniel sat on an overturned box.

“How did I not know this?”

Rachel answered carefully.

“Did Vanessa tell you where she and Claire met?”

“She said a charity board.”

Ruiz looked at the card.

“She lied.”

The chronology began forming.

Twelve years earlier, Claire Beaumont ran her family company.

Vanessa Hart worked in client relations.

Adrian Cole worked as a consultant.

The company collapsed.

Northbridge acquired its assets.

Claire later married Daniel.

Years afterward, Vanessa re-entered Claire’s life as a friend.

Then introduced Adrian to Mercer Development.

Daniel hired him.

Money disappeared.

Daniel fired Adrian.

Claire investigated.

Then Claire became seriously ill.

After Claire’s death, Vanessa comforted Daniel.

Two years later, Daniel married her.

Lily whispered:

“She didn’t enter our family after Mom died.”

“She came back.”

Daniel looked sick.

Ruiz received a call.

The storage facility’s cameras had captured whoever entered Unit 314.

The footage showed Vanessa.

Not Adrian.

At 9:07 that morning, she arrived alone wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

She left with three boxes.

Daniel stared at the image.

“She knows about Claire’s archive.”

Martin nodded.

“Which means she probably knows Claire discovered the Beaumont connection.”

“Where would she take the boxes?”

Ruiz requested traffic-camera assistance but warned that tracing her route might take time.

Lily walked around the empty unit.

One box had been ripped apart.

Inside were old photographs.

Most were ordinary.

Then she saw a picture of Claire, Vanessa, and several Beaumont employees at a company picnic.

Vanessa was younger.

Smiling.

Standing beside Adrian.

On Adrian’s wrist was the same distinctive steel watch he wore in Lily’s hallway video.

On the back Claire had written names.

Lily read them aloud.

“Vanessa Hart. Adrian Cole. Thomas Reed…”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“What?”

“Thomas Reed.”

Daniel took the photograph.

He knew the name.

Thomas Reed had been his father’s longtime financial adviser.

The man who helped create the Mercer Family Trust.

Martin went silent.

“Thomas had access to every trust document.”

Daniel nodded.

“He died five years ago.”

Ruiz asked:

“Natural causes?”

“Yes. Heart attack.”

Again she warned:

“Do not create a conspiracy where evidence doesn’t support one.”

But Lily wasn’t thinking about Thomas’s death.

She was thinking about access.

Vanessa and Adrian had known the man who designed the trust.

Before Claire died.

Before Vanessa married Daniel.

Daniel turned the photograph over again.

There was another note beneath the names.

Claire had written:

Thomas says Adrian already knows about the incapacity clause.

And below it:

Someone inside Mercer gave it to him.

Daniel looked at Martin.

“At that time, only three people had copies.”

“Who?”

“My father. Thomas.”

He paused.

“And me.”

Martin shook his head.

“Someone else could have copied it.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then Lily noticed Claire had circled one face in the background.

A woman.

Rachel.

May you like

Twelve years younger.
