Chapter 1 - The Half-Open DoorRain struck the upstairs windows of Daniel Mercer’s suburban home hard enough to sound like thrown gravel.

Eleven-year-old Lily Mercer walked down the hallway with her science notebook pressed against her chest, trying not to think about the thunder.

Her father was supposed to be home late.

Vanessa had said he was meeting a client downtown.

Lily had been finishing homework at the kitchen table when she remembered the colored markers in her bedroom. She had climbed the stairs quietly because Vanessa had complained about having a headache and said she was going to bed early.

Then Lily noticed the light.

Warm yellow light spilled through the half-open door of the master bedroom.

She heard a man laugh.

Not her father.

Lily stopped.

The bedroom door opened wider.

A man in his forties stepped into the hallway, fastening the front of his dark jacket.

He froze when he saw her.

For half a second, neither moved.

Lily recognized fear in his face before he looked away.

“Excuse me,” he muttered.

He hurried toward the stairs.

Lily turned slowly toward the bedroom.

Vanessa stood in the doorway wearing the same dark green blouse she had worn at dinner.

Her hair was loose.

Her lipstick was smudged.

Lily understood.

“I’m telling Dad.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not dramatically.

That frightened Lily more.

The warmth disappeared from her eyes.

Vanessa crossed the hallway.

Lily backed up, but the wall stopped her.

Vanessa gripped her shoulders.

“You saw nothing.”

“Let go.”

“You tell your father…”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“…and you’ll regret it.”

Lily’s notebook slipped from her hands.

It hit the carpet.

Vanessa released her.

“Go to your room.”

Lily bent down.

Beneath the notebook was her phone.

The camera was still recording.

She had started filming the storm through the upstairs window for a school weather project before walking toward her room.

The phone had captured everything.

Lily closed the notebook over it.

“Okay.”

Vanessa stared at her for another second.

Then the front door opened downstairs.

“Lily? Vanessa? I’m home.”

Daniel.

Vanessa went completely still.

Lily looked toward the stairs.

Vanessa looked at the notebook.

“Give me the phone.”

Lily’s fingers tightened.

Daniel’s footsteps started climbing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Lily.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Give it to me.”

Lily backed away.

Her heart pounded against her ribs.

Then she said the first thing that came into her mind.

“Dad already has it.”

Vanessa went pale.

The reaction was instant.

Too instant.

For the first time, Lily realized something more important than the affair.

Vanessa was not afraid Daniel would discover she was cheating.

She was afraid of what else might have been recorded.

Daniel reached the top stair.

“What’s going on?”

Vanessa transformed before Lily’s eyes.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Her expression softened.

“Nothing,” she said. “Lily startled me.”

Daniel looked from his wife to his daughter.

Lily almost spoke.

Then she noticed the man’s wet footprint on the carpet behind Vanessa.

And beside it—

a small silver object.

Something had fallen from his jacket.

Daniel followed Lily’s eyes.

Vanessa moved first.

She stepped directly over it.

“Come downstairs,” she told Daniel. “You’re soaked.”

Daniel frowned.

“Lily?”

Vanessa smiled.

Lily remembered the grip on her shoulders.

You’ll regret it.

“I’m tired,” Lily whispered.

Daniel hesitated.

“All right.”

Vanessa guided him toward the stairs.

Lily waited until they disappeared.

Then she knelt and reached beneath the edge of the hallway runner.

Her fingers found the object Vanessa had tried to hide.

It was a silver key.

Not a house key.

A safety-deposit-box key.

Stamped on one side were three letters and four numbers.

Lily stared at it.

She had seen those letters before.

On an envelope in her father’s office.

The envelope Daniel had once told Vanessa never to touch.

Downstairs, Vanessa laughed at something Daniel said.

Lily looked at her phone.

The recording was still running.

She stopped it.

Thirty-seven seconds.

She opened the video.

The stranger crossed the hallway.

Vanessa appeared.

The threat followed.

But just before the man left the bedroom, his voice could be heard from inside.

Faint.

Almost lost beneath the storm.

Lily turned up the volume.

The man said:

“You have until Friday to get Daniel’s signature.”

Then Vanessa answered:

“And after that, the house is ours.”

Lily stopped breathing.

This was not just about cheating.

She looked toward the stairs.

Downstairs, her father was taking off his wet coat beside the woman who had just threatened his daughter.

Lily slipped the silver key into her pajama pocket.

Then she uploaded the video somewhere Vanessa could not delete it.

Not to Daniel.

Not yet.

To the private cloud folder her mother had created years ago before she died.

The folder was named:

FOR LILY — IMPORTANT THINGS.

The upload completed.

Three seconds later, Lily received an automated notification.

A file already existed in the folder.

One she had never seen.

Uploaded by her mother six years earlier.

Its title was simple.

IF DANIEL EVER MARRIES VANESSA, SHOW HIM THIS.
