Chapter 6 - The House Becomes EvidencePolice took the threat seriously.

Not dramatically.

There were no flashing lights outside Mercer Development, no squad of detectives storming Daniel’s house.

Instead, Detective Elena Ruiz sat with Daniel, Lily, Martin, and Rachel in a quiet conference room and listened.

Ruiz was in her forties and had the calm expression of someone who disliked assumptions.

She watched the hallway recording twice.

“Vanessa putting her hands on Lily matters,” she said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Then arrest her.”

Ruiz looked at him.

“That decision involves more than anger.”

“She threatened a child.”

“Yes.”

“My child.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

Lily touched Daniel’s sleeve.

“Dad.”

He stopped.

Ruiz continued.

“The larger financial allegations require documentation. Forged deeds, fraudulent trust changes, impersonation, possible conspiracy. If we move too early, people destroy evidence.”

Daniel looked at Martin.

The same warning again.

Ruiz asked Lily:

“Do you feel safe going home?”

Lily looked at Daniel.

“With Dad.”

Ruiz nodded.

“Then Vanessa should not be there tonight.”

Daniel immediately agreed.

But Martin raised a complication.

“If Daniel throws her out without explanation, she knows everything has collapsed.”

Ruiz considered.

“Can Lily stay elsewhere?”

Daniel answered before anyone else.

“With me.”

“I mean somewhere Vanessa doesn’t control.”

Rachel offered her guest room.

Daniel hated the idea.

Lily understood why.

“I’ll stay with Rachel tonight.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“No.”

“Vanessa already knows I recorded her.”

Daniel looked away.

Ruiz said gently:

“Keeping Lily away from Vanessa while preserving the investigation is sensible.”

Daniel finally agreed.

That evening, Lily went to Rachel’s house.

Daniel returned home alone.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

“Where is she?”

“At Rachel’s.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Why?”

“She wanted a sleepover.”

“With your executive assistant?”

“She likes Rachel.”

Vanessa studied him.

“Did Lily tell you something?”

Daniel removed his coat.

“What would she tell me?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then smiled.

“That she saw an old friend visiting.”

“Who?”

“Michael.”

Daniel almost admired the ease of the lie.

“Michael who?”

“Michael Grant.”

“Do I know him?”

“No.”

“Why was he in our bedroom?”

Vanessa’s eyes cooled.

“He wasn’t.”

“Lily said he came out of it.”

“Lily misunderstood.”

Daniel walked toward the kitchen.

Vanessa followed.

“You believe her over me?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t need to.”

Daniel opened the refrigerator.

His hands were steady despite the rage in his chest.

Vanessa leaned against the counter.

“She’s been acting strangely.”

“How?”

“Secretive. Suspicious.”

“She’s eleven.”

“She still hasn’t processed Claire’s death.”

Daniel looked at her.

Six years.

Vanessa had never used Claire’s death against Lily before.

Now she was building a narrative.

Exactly as Martin predicted.

Vanessa continued.

“She sometimes confuses memories.”

“No, she doesn’t.”

“You’re defensive.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“And I’m your wife.”

Daniel closed the refrigerator.

“For how long?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

He walked upstairs.

Vanessa watched him go.

In the master bedroom, Daniel found the bed perfectly made.

No evidence.

But Detective Ruiz had instructed him not to search aggressively.

So Daniel simply looked.

The room felt unfamiliar.

Vanessa entered behind him.

“You’re angry.”

“I’m tired.”

“Daniel.”

She touched his back.

He moved away.

That frightened her more than shouting would have.

“You’ve been different lately,” she said.

“So have you.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Is this about Lily?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Daniel turned toward her.

For one reckless second, he nearly showed her the video.

Then he noticed something.

Her nightstand.

The drawer was open half an inch.

Inside was the corner of a white envelope.

Daniel had seen that stationery before.

First State Heritage Bank.

He walked toward the bathroom instead.

“I’m taking a shower.”

Vanessa’s eyes followed him.

Later, after she fell asleep, Daniel did not open the drawer.

He photographed it from across the room.

Then he texted the image to Ruiz.

At 1:14 A.M., Vanessa’s phone lit up.

She picked it up and left the bedroom.

Daniel waited.

Then quietly followed.

She went downstairs into his study.

He stayed at the top of the stairs.

Vanessa whispered into the phone.

“He knows something.”

Pause.

“No. Lily is gone.”

Another pause.

“I said I can still get the signature.”

Daniel recorded from his own phone.

Vanessa lowered her voice further.

“Friday has to happen.”

Pause.

Then:

“If Daniel won’t cooperate, use the other plan.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa listened.

Her answer was chilling.

“No. Don’t touch Lily again. You already scared her too much.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around the railing.

Again.

Adrian had done something to Lily before.

Something Daniel did not know.

Vanessa continued:

“She remembers more than we thought.”

Daniel stepped backward.

A floorboard creaked.

Vanessa went silent.

She looked toward the stairs.

“Daniel?”

He did not move.

She approached.

He had nowhere to hide without making noise.

Then lightning flashed outside.

The power cut out.

The house dropped into darkness.

Daniel moved silently into the guest room.

Vanessa reached the landing.

“Daniel?”

No answer.

A minute later, the power returned.

Daniel waited.

Then slipped back into bed.

Vanessa entered ten minutes later.

She stared at him in the darkness.

Daniel pretended to sleep.

At 2:03 A.M., his phone vibrated beneath the pillow.

A message from Detective Ruiz.

Do not confront her. We identified Adrian Cole’s current company.

Another message followed.

Daniel, he works for a private guardianship consulting firm.
