Chapter 14 - Vanessa’s Version of JusticeDaniel remained seated.

“Us?”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

He gave a slight nod.

She began.

Her father had invested nearly everything he owned in Beaumont Residential.

Not shares.

Private construction contracts, equipment leases, and supplier credit.

When Beaumont collapsed, Vanessa’s family lost hundreds of thousands.

Her father’s company failed.

He died two years later deeply in debt.

Daniel listened.

For the first time, he saw the grievance beneath the greed.

Vanessa had been twenty-four.

She blamed Claire.

Then learned Claire had not caused Beaumont’s collapse.

Adrian showed her the financial weaknesses.

Together, they exploited them.

“You sabotaged the company you said ruined your father?” Daniel asked.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“It was already dying.”

“So you killed it faster.”

“We protected ourselves.”

“By stealing data.”

“By surviving.”

Adrian interrupted.

“William Mercer was the real predator.”

After Beaumont collapsed, William purchased distressed parcels through intermediaries.

He paid a fraction of their later value.

One became the West Chester property.

Vanessa said:

“Your father made millions because Claire’s family lost everything.”

“My father bought land legally.”

“Legally isn’t the same as clean.”

Daniel could not dismiss that.

His father had been ruthless.

But Vanessa’s grievance did not justify fraud.

“You married me for the land.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“At first?”

The words hurt.

“Yes.”

“At first.”

Daniel almost wished she had simply said yes.

“Then what changed?”

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“Life.”

Adrian looked irritated.

Daniel understood another fracture.

Vanessa’s relationship with Adrian was not straightforward.

Adrian had been partner, lover, strategist.

But four years of marriage had complicated the plan.

“You cared about us.”

Vanessa looked away.

“Don’t.”

“You did.”

“Don’t make this sentimental.”

“You raised Lily.”

“I know.”

“You packed her lunches. Sat through school plays. Stayed up when she had the flu.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I said stop.”

Adrian slammed his palm on the table.

“This is irrelevant.”

Vanessa flinched.

Daniel saw it.

Adrian controlled more than the scheme.

Maybe he controlled Vanessa too.

Daniel asked:

“Whose idea was threatening Lily?”

Vanessa stared at him.

Adrian said:

“The girl involved herself.”

“She’s eleven.”

“She recorded private conduct.”

Daniel’s hand tightened under the table.

“Did you follow her?”

Adrian smiled.

“I made sure she was safe.”

Vanessa looked at him sharply.

That answer bothered her.

Daniel noticed.

“Did Vanessa know you followed Lily near school?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved to Adrian.

He did not answer.

A crack widened.

Daniel continued.

“Did she know about the SUV?”

“Daniel,” Vanessa warned.

“You told him not to touch her again.”

Vanessa went pale.

He had heard the phone call.

Adrian turned toward her.

“You said he was asleep.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“You’re both lying to each other.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Nice attempt.”

“You forged documents using Vanessa’s access. What happens when this collapses? Who goes to prison first?”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

Daniel kept pushing.

“The wife with direct access to my home, signature, files, and daughter.”

“Stop.”

“Adrian can claim you acted alone.”

“He can’t.”

“Why not?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Because she had evidence against Adrian.

Daniel knew it.

Adrian knew Daniel knew it.

The room changed.

Daniel said softly:

“You kept insurance.”

Vanessa stood.

“We’re done.”

Adrian grabbed her forearm.

“Sit.”

Daniel rose instantly.

“Take your hand off her.”

Adrian stared at him.

Then released Vanessa.

For a surreal moment, Daniel had defended the woman conspiring against him.

Vanessa looked shaken.

Outside, Ruiz’s team waited.

They still wanted more.

Daniel asked:

“What happens if I sign?”

Adrian regained control.

“Northbridge purchases West Chester at a predetermined price.”

“How much?”

“Fourteen million.”

The land was worth nearly forty.

Daniel laughed once.

“You’re stealing twenty-four million.”

“Recovering stolen value.”

“For whom?”

Vanessa answered:

“For families William Mercer profited from.”

Adrian looked annoyed again.

Daniel noticed another discrepancy.

Vanessa believed the money would compensate victims.

Adrian may have planned something else.

“How many families?”

“Seventeen.”

“Show me.”

Adrian refused.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Have you seen the list?”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

She had not.

Adrian said:

“We’re not debating structure.”

Daniel smiled.

“No. Apparently you two never did.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

She turned toward Adrian.

“Show me the list.”

“Later.”

“Now.”

He stared.

The partnership cracked further.

Daniel’s concealed device captured everything.

Then Adrian’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“We need to leave.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Why?”

“Now.”

They hurried toward the door.

Daniel remained seated.

Police did not arrest them.

Not yet.

Investigators followed.

Daniel left through another exit.

An hour later, Ruiz called.

Adrian had discovered the surveillance.

Someone warned him.

“From where?”

“We don’t know.”

The leak could be inside the bank, police, or federal team.

Daniel’s world shrank again.

Then Rachel called.

Her voice was panicked.

“Daniel, Vanessa just entered Mercer Development.”

“What?”

“She used your spouse access badge.”

“Where is she?”

“Your father’s records room.”

Daniel understood instantly.

William Mercer’s original files.

The documents proving how he acquired the Beaumont land.

If Vanessa destroyed them, Daniel might never know whether his father had merely bought distressed property—

or participated in Adrian’s scheme.

Daniel drove toward the office.

But Lily, sitting beside Rachel’s security monitor, saw something he could not.

Vanessa was not destroying files.

She was searching desperately for one.

When she found it, she sat down on the floor.
