Chapter 10 - Rachel’s SecretDaniel looked at Rachel as though he no longer recognized her.

Rachel stared at the photograph.

“That’s me.”

“You worked for Beaumont?”

“For four months.”

“You never told me.”

“I didn’t know it mattered.”

Daniel’s laugh contained no humor.

“Everything matters now.”

Rachel sat down.

Lily watched carefully.

Rachel had been the one person besides Martin whom Daniel trusted without reservation.

Now even she had a hidden connection.

“I was twenty-four,” Rachel said. “Temporary administrative assistant. I processed invoices.”

“For Claire?”

“For several departments.”

“Did you know Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“You told me yesterday you recognized him from the Christmas party.”

Rachel looked ashamed.

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because I panicked.”

Daniel stood.

“About what?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Because Claire asked me to help her.”

Silence.

Lily stepped closer.

“With what?”

“Finding the missing payments.”

Daniel stared.

“You knew Claire was investigating Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Years.”

Daniel walked away.

Rachel continued.

“When Beaumont collapsed, Claire believed someone had manipulated internal numbers. I helped her copy invoice logs before the company was sold.”

“And you never told me?”

“She made me promise.”

“Claire is dead.”

“I know.”

“That promise died with her.”

Rachel flinched.

Martin intervened.

“Why did Claire want secrecy?”

Rachel looked at Lily.

“Because she wasn’t sure who to trust.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Including me?”

Rachel hesitated.

That answer hurt more than yes.

“She trusted you personally,” Rachel said. “But she knew Mercer Development had people connected to Adrian.”

“Who?”

“I never found out.”

Daniel looked toward the photograph of Thomas Reed.

Rachel nodded.

“Claire suspected Thomas.”

Martin frowned.

“Thomas created the trust.”

“Yes.”

“Did Claire have proof?”

“No.”

Daniel asked:

“Why did you come work for me?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Claire asked me to.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

Daniel went still.

“When?”

“After you fired Adrian.”

“So my wife placed you inside my company?”

“She wanted someone watching financial systems Adrian had touched.”

Daniel sat heavily.

“You’ve been protecting me for eight years.”

Rachel looked down.

“I tried.”

“Why didn’t you warn me about Vanessa?”

“I did.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

“Three months after Claire died. I told you Vanessa had worked at Beaumont.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No, you didn’t.”

“I did.”

“I would remember.”

“You were barely sleeping. You were drinking too much. You told me you didn’t care about old company history.”

Daniel’s face fell.

A memory returned.

A conference room.

Rachel saying something about Vanessa and Claire knowing each other longer than he thought.

Daniel telling her to stop digging into Claire’s life.

He had forgotten.

No.

He had chosen not to hear.

Rachel continued.

“After that, Vanessa became useful to you. She handled Lily’s school pickups. She brought food. She helped with the funeral paperwork. Every time I tried to raise questions, you shut down.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily didn’t know what to say.

Rachel opened her laptop.

“There’s more.”

Years earlier, Claire had given Rachel encrypted backups.

She had kept them offline because Claire feared company systems were compromised.

Rachel had never opened some files because she lacked the password.

“What password did Mom use?” Lily asked.

Rachel shrugged.

“Claire said Daniel would know if he ever became ready to see them.”

Daniel almost laughed bitterly.

“That sounds like her.”

The password prompt showed one hint:

FIRST PROMISE.

Daniel tried their wedding date.

Wrong.

Lily’s birthday.

Wrong.

The address of their first apartment.

Wrong.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Stay.”

He typed it.

The archive opened.

Lily looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“The first night Claire and I met, she tried to leave a terrible fundraiser early. I asked her to stay for one drink.”

The files appeared.

Hundreds.

Claire had documented Beaumont’s collapse in extraordinary detail.

Invoice manipulation.

Leaked lender data.

Shell companies.

Internal emails.

Then Rachel found a folder titled:

V.H. / A.C.

Inside were messages between Vanessa and Adrian.

Not romantic.

Operational.

Vanessa provided Adrian with customer lists, internal cost data, and lender contacts from Beaumont.

Adrian paid her through a consulting company.

Claire’s business had not simply failed.

It had been sabotaged from inside.

Daniel whispered:

“Vanessa helped destroy Claire’s family company.”

Rachel nodded.

“And Adrian profited.”

Lily felt sick.

Then she saw an email dated six months before Beaumont’s collapse.

Vanessa to Adrian:

Once Beaumont is gone, we move on to Mercer. Claire is getting serious with Daniel Mercer. If she marries him, we’ll have an introduction.

Daniel stopped breathing.

They had targeted him before he married Claire.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because Claire had unknowingly led them to a wealthier family.

Another email followed.

Adrian wrote:

Thomas says Mercer’s trust is difficult but not impossible. We need someone closer.

Vanessa responded:

Claire won’t bring me close enough while she’s healthy.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily noticed a final encrypted file.

Unlike the others, it had been opened recently.

Two days ago.

Rachel’s face went white.

“I haven’t accessed this archive in months.”

Martin asked:

“Who has?”

Rachel checked the access log.

A remote login.

From Mercer Development’s internal network.

Daniel looked toward the office.

Someone inside his company was still working with Vanessa and Adrian.

And that person had just learned they were investigating.
