Chapter 2 - Her Mother’s WarningLily stared at the filename until the letters blurred.

Her mother, Claire Mercer, had died when Lily was five.
Daniel rarely discussed the final months of Claire’s life because the memories still hurt him. Lily remembered hospital rooms, quiet voices, and her mother squeezing her fingers beneath a white blanket.
She also remembered Vanessa.
Back then, Vanessa had been Claire’s friend.
That fact suddenly felt poisonous.
Lily sat on her bedroom floor with headphones pressed tightly over her ears and opened the old file.
The screen showed Claire sitting in what looked like Daniel’s study.
She was thinner than Lily remembered.
Her voice was weak but steady.
“If Lily is watching this someday,” Claire said, “then something happened that I hoped would never happen.”
Lily covered her mouth.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa knows things about Daniel’s finances that she should never have learned.”
Lily’s heart began pounding again.
“Three months ago, I discovered copies of documents missing from Daniel’s home office. Insurance statements. Property records. Information about Mercer Development.”
Daniel owned a regional construction and property company started by his father.
Lily knew it was successful.
She had never cared how successful.
Claire continued.
“I confronted Vanessa. She said she was helping me organize things because I was sick. I wanted to believe her.”
Claire looked down.
“I didn’t.”
A noise sounded in the hallway outside Lily’s room.
She stopped the video.
Footsteps.
Vanessa.
The doorknob turned.
Lily quickly slid the phone beneath her pillow.
Vanessa entered without knocking.
“You should be asleep.”
“I’m doing homework.”
“At eleven thirty?”
Lily shrugged.
Vanessa studied her.
“Where’s your phone?”
“Charging.”
“Where?”
“Bathroom.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the connected bathroom door.
Lily forced herself not to look nervous.
Vanessa crossed the room.
“Your father seemed concerned downstairs.”
“About what?”
“Your behavior.”
“My behavior?”
Vanessa smiled.
“We both know children sometimes misunderstand adult situations.”
Lily said nothing.
Vanessa sat beside her.
“I don’t want tonight to become something ugly.”
“You threatened me.”
“I was upset.”
“You grabbed me.”
“And I shouldn’t have.”
Vanessa reached toward Lily’s hair.
Lily flinched.
Vanessa’s hand stopped.
A flicker of irritation crossed her face.
Then the gentle expression returned.
“Your father has been under enormous pressure lately.”
“What pressure?”
“Business.”
Lily remembered the recording.
You have until Friday to get Daniel’s signature.
“What happens Friday?”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“Why would you ask that?”
Lily shrugged.
“No reason.”
Vanessa stood.
“Go to sleep.”
She walked toward the door.
“Vanessa?”
She turned.
“Who was the man?”
Silence.
“An old friend.”
“Does Dad know him?”
“Yes.”
That answer came too quickly.
“What’s his name?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Good night, Lily.”
She closed the door.
Lily waited thirty seconds.
Then locked it.
She returned to Claire’s video.
Her mother was saying:
“The man helping Vanessa is named Adrian Cole.”
Lily nearly dropped the phone.
She rewound.
Claire repeated the name.
“Adrian Cole worked briefly for Mercer Development. Daniel fired him after discovering irregularities involving subcontractor payments. Vanessa defended Adrian even though she claimed she barely knew him.”
Lily felt cold.
The unknown man now had a name.
Adrian.
Claire took a shaky breath.
“I found proof Vanessa and Adrian were exchanging messages before I became ill.”
Lily leaned closer.
“I don’t know whether they were having an affair. That isn’t what frightened me.”
Claire lifted a document.
“They were asking questions about Daniel’s ownership structure.”
The video zoomed badly as Claire moved the page toward the camera.
Lily could make out a company name:
MERCER FAMILY HOLDINGS LLC.
Claire continued.
“Daniel’s father structured several properties so they cannot be transferred without multiple approvals. Vanessa seemed especially interested in the house.”
Lily looked around her bedroom.
The house.
Their house.
“She once asked me what would happen to it if Daniel died.”
Lily’s stomach twisted.
Claire quickly added:
“I am not accusing her of planning to hurt him. I have no evidence of that. But I learned something else.”
Claire held up a bank envelope.
The same three letters Lily had seen stamped on the silver key.
“First State Heritage Bank.”
Lily pulled the key from her pocket.
The initials matched.
Claire said:
“I opened a safety-deposit box containing copies of everything. Daniel does not know because I didn’t want him confronting Vanessa without evidence.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“If I recover, I’ll tell him myself.”
She never had.
“If I don’t,” Claire continued, “Lily, someday you may have to decide whether this matters.”
The video ended.
Lily sat motionless.
Then someone knocked.
“Lily?”
Her father.
She quickly shut the laptop.
“Come in.”
Daniel stepped inside.
His hair was still damp from the storm.
“You okay?”
Lily wanted to tell him everything.
Instead she asked:
“Dad, do you know someone named Adrian Cole?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
It was subtle.
But Lily saw it.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Nowhere.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Lily.”
Before she could answer, Vanessa appeared behind him.
She was holding Lily’s phone.
“I found this in the bathroom.”
Lily stared.
It was not her phone.
Same model.
Same case.
But not hers.
Vanessa placed it on the desk.
“You really shouldn’t leave expensive things lying around.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Everything all right?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Perfect.”
Then Lily noticed the screen.
The fake phone displayed her exact wallpaper.
Vanessa had prepared it before coming upstairs.
Which meant Vanessa had expected to need a substitute phone.
Lily looked at her stepmother.
Vanessa’s smile stayed perfectly still.
That was when Lily understood something terrifying.
Tonight had not gone wrong for Vanessa.

Vanessa had planned for someone to discover something.
The only question was what.
