Chapter 22 - No More Inherited Orders

The subpoenas covered Moretti Properties, Moretti Security, Meridian Wharf and six historical shell companies.

Dante’s criminal lawyers advised silence.

His corporate lawyers advised cooperation.

His oldest associates advised something else.

Destroy what remained.

Three men came to the mansion after midnight.

All had served Salvatore.

All expected Dante to understand.

“CROWN disappears,” one said. “Ferraro keeps quiet. Pike takes the fall.”

Dante sat in his father’s library.

“No.”

The man frowned.

“You don’t understand what your father built.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You’ll lose contracts.”

“Maybe.”

“Properties.”

“Maybe.”

“People will go to prison.”

“Yes.”

The man stared.

“Victor made you weak.”

Dante looked toward the scorched eagle medallion on the desk.

“No. My father made all of you afraid.”

The meeting ended without threats.

That was new.

Marco escorted the men out.

When he returned, he placed his security badge on the desk.

Dante looked at it.

“What’s this?”

“My resignation.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to say no.”

Dante almost smiled.

Marco sat opposite him.

“I built a security company that Daniel penetrated, Ferraro corrupted and Renner used to steal from you.”

“You also kept me alive for fifteen years.”

“That doesn’t erase the rest.”

“No.”

Marco leaned back.

“I need to know who I am when I’m not protecting a Moretti.”

Dante understood more than he wanted to.

“Go.”

Marco nodded.

“I’ll stay until Renner is found.”

“No inherited orders?”

“No inherited orders.”

They shook hands.

Not boss and soldier.

Two men.

Paul Renner was found forty-eight hours later in Atlantic City.

Not by mobsters.

By federal agents acting on information supplied through Dante’s counsel.

Renner carried a laptop containing Ferraro communications.

The evidence confirmed Ferraro had watched Daniel Pike’s surveillance and exploited it.

Ferraro had ordered Renner to duplicate Marco’s token.

He had redirected Anna’s attempted money transfers.

He had planted additional forged pages in Nico’s ledger after Daniel created the first set.

He had sent the threatening photograph of Lily.

Daniel’s face changed when he learned that.

“I thought I did that to her.”

“You frightened her enough,” Marco said.

Daniel nodded.

No defense.

Renner also carried the missing final piece.

Ferraro’s written instructions.

Trigger the continuity covenant.

Acquire Moretti shares.

Force Dante out if he challenged the transfer.

Then divide the company among the four families.

But the other three families had not known.

Ferraro had intended to keep the largest share.

Teresa Vescari sent Dante a single message after learning the truth.

Your father taught all of us to distrust gifts.

Dante replied:

For once, he was useful.

Victor returned to the mansion three weeks after the shooting.

He walked with a cane.

Lily saw him and shouted, “You didn’t die!”

Victor laughed until it hurt.

“Apparently not.”

Elena brought him tea.

Victor looked around the library.

“Where’s Salvatore’s portrait?”

Dante had removed it.

“In storage.”

Victor nodded.

“Good.”

“You don’t think I’m erasing history?”

“No. Paintings are not history.”

Dante sat across from him.

“Federal prosecutors want your statement.”

“They can have it.”

“You may be charged.”

“I should be.”

Dante stared at the old man who had spent decades managing consequences for everyone else.

“You could fight.”

“I will. Against anything false.”

Victor looked toward CROWN.

“But I won’t fight the truth.”

Dante asked the question he had avoided.

“Why did you stay with my father?”

Victor smiled sadly.

“Same reason Marco stayed with you longer than he should have. Love, fear, loyalty, habit. People like simple motives because they make judgment easier.”

“And which was it?”

“All of them.”

Dante nodded.

Victor leaned forward.

“Your mistake will be believing you can become clean simply by doing the opposite of Salvatore.”

Dante frowned.

“He controlled everyone, so you’ll refuse control. He hid everything, so you’ll expose everything. He used violence, so you’ll avoid it. That can become another kind of prison.”

“What should I do?”

“Decide each thing on its own.”

Dante smiled faintly.

“That sounds difficult.”

“It is.”

Lily appeared at the doorway with blue scissors.

Every adult froze.

She looked confused.

Elena hurried after her.

“She’s doing crafts.”

Victor laughed again.

Dante looked at the scissors.

Three weeks earlier, four guns had appeared because a child moved unexpectedly.

Now nobody reached for anything.

That difference mattered more than anyone said.

Lily held out a paper crown.

“I made this for you.”

Dante took it.

The crown was yellow.

Crooked.

Covered in stars.

Victor’s eyes filled.

Dante placed it on his head.

Marco, entering behind them, stopped.

Then laughed for the first time in weeks.

Dante looked ridiculous.

May you like

He knew it.

He did not remove the crown.
