Chapter 13 - Mercy as a Weakness

Dante moved Elena and Lily out of the mansion that night.
Not to another Moretti property.
To a hotel Elena chose herself.
He gave her cash, two unregistered emergency phones and the number of an attorney who knew nothing about Moretti business.
“No guards?” she asked.
“Two will be nearby.”
“You said I choose.”
“You do.”
She studied him.
Then nodded.
“Two. But they stay in the lobby.”
“Agreed.”
Lily held Dante’s severed tie section.
He had forgotten she still had it.
“I fixed it.”
She had used yellow thread.
Badly.
The severed silk now hung together crookedly.
Dante smiled despite everything.
“You did.”
“You can wear it.”
“I think it’s retired.”
Lily frowned.
“Because I cut it?”
“Because it did its job.”
She seemed pleased.
Elena watched the exchange.
When Lily stepped into the elevator with Rosa, Elena remained behind.
“Your father wrote mercy was a weakness.”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe him?”
Dante looked toward the closing elevator.
“Yesterday I might have.”
“And today?”
“Today mercy saved my life.”
Elena shook her head.
“Lily saved your life.”
“That too.”
She entered the elevator.
Dante returned to CROWN.
Marco had spent hours reviewing the BELLINI file.
Salvatore had documented Marco’s grief like a scientist.
ANGER DIRECTIONAL.
FAMILY LOSS CREATES DEPENDENCE.
KEEP EMPLOYED.
GIVE RESPONSIBILITY.
NEVER GIVE FULL TRUTH.
Marco closed the folder.
“I was a project.”
Victor stood across the room.
“So was everyone.”
Marco looked at him.
“You helped him.”
“Yes.”
The admission was immediate.
“I did things I’m ashamed of.”
“Specific.”
Victor swallowed.
“I convinced you not to pursue a private investigation into Nico’s death.”
“Yes.”
“I arranged payments to Anna.”
“Yes.”
“I lied about the medallion.”
“Yes.”
Marco’s voice shook.
“What else?”
Victor stared at the floor.
“I knew Cross had ordered the records removed.”
“Before the fire?”
“Yes.”
Marco crossed the room and punched him.
Victor hit the shelving.
Dante did not intervene.
One punch.
Marco stepped back.
Victor touched his bleeding lip.
“I deserved that.”
Marco’s hands trembled.
“You deserved twenty years of them.”
“Probably.”
Dante said, “Enough.”
Marco turned toward him.
“Your father murdered my brother.”
“Yes.”
“You inherited the men who covered it.”
“Yes.”
“You inherited the money.”
“Yes.”
“And I protected you.”
Dante met his eyes.
“Yes.”
Marco’s anger collapsed into exhaustion.
“What am I supposed to do with that?”
“I don’t know.”
For once, Dante refused to manufacture an answer.
Victor wiped his mouth.
“Maybe start by surviving Pike.”
Marco looked at him.
“Then what?”
Victor smiled sadly.
“Then decide whether you want to become the kind of man Salvatore expected.”
The old computer chimed.
A new message had appeared.
LIVE CONNECTION DETECTED.
Someone was accessing CROWN remotely.
Marco moved to the terminal.
“Pike?”
The connection came through a relay.
Victor examined the screen.
“He’s opening another file.”
Which file?
ANNA KESSLER.
The directory should not have contained her.
Dante opened it.
Photographs.
Payments.
Medical records.
Surveillance.
Salvatore had watched Anna after Nico’s death.
One document revealed something they had not known.
Anna had not miscarried.
Marco read the hospital note twice.
“She didn’t lose the baby.”
Victor stared.
“She told Cross she did.”
Dante continued through the file.
The baby had been born prematurely seven months after Nico’s death.
A boy.
Placed for adoption under a sealed proceeding.
Marco sat down.
“My brother had a son.”
Victor whispered, “Salvatore knew.”
Dante felt sick.
The file showed Salvatore had tracked the adoption for three years.
Then the records stopped.
Marco looked at Dante.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Another file opened remotely.
A photograph appeared.
Daniel Pike.
Age six.
Standing beside adoptive parents.
Marco froze.
Dante understood before he wanted to.
Pike was thirty-eight.
The dates matched.
Victor whispered, “No.”
The screen changed.
A live text message appeared.
NOW YOU KNOW WHY I CAME HOME.
Marco stared at it.
Daniel Pike was not merely Anna’s accomplice.
He was Nico Bellini’s son.
Marco’s nephew.
Salvatore Moretti had spent decades turning grief into loyalty.

Now the child he had hidden had grown into the man dismantling the Moretti family from inside.
And Marco had unknowingly hired him seven years earlier.
