Chapter 16 - The Button

“Press it,” Dante said.
Marco turned toward him.
“Dante.”
Daniel looked genuinely surprised.
“You think I won’t?”
“I think you came here hoping someone would stop you.”
Daniel’s thumb tightened.
“Arrogant.”
“Probably.”
Dante descended the final stair.
“You had seven years. You could have released everything yesterday.”
“I needed the complete archive.”
“No.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
Dante continued.
“You needed an audience.”
Anna whispered, “He’s right.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Don’t.”
“You could have sent the records anonymously years ago.”
“They wouldn’t understand.”
“You wanted them to know you did it.”
Daniel’s hand shook.
Dante stepped closer.
“You wanted Marco to know who you were.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You wanted Victor to hear Nico’s name. You wanted me to hear my father’s voice. You wanted someone to finally look at what happened and say it mattered.”
“Stop analyzing me.”
“Then press it.”
Marco grabbed Dante’s arm.
“Enough.”
Dante did not move.
“If those files contain real evidence, some of it should be released.”
Victor appeared at the stairs behind him.
Daniel laughed.
“Of course you brought him.”
Victor entered slowly.
No weapon.
“I came because I owe your father something.”
Daniel’s eyes turned cold.
“You owe him a life.”
“I know.”
Victor removed an envelope from his coat.
“I wrote a statement.”
“Confession?”
“Yes.”
Victor placed it on the table.
“I lied about the warehouse. I hid the medallion. I helped Salvatore intimidate witnesses. I paid Anna because I was too much of a coward to tell the truth publicly.”
Daniel stared at the envelope.
“Why now?”
Victor looked toward Marco.
“Because thirty years late is still better than never.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You think that fixes anything?”
“No.”
That answer stopped him.
Victor continued.
“I don’t expect forgiveness. I expect consequences.”
Dante looked at Daniel.
“You want consequences? Fine.”
He placed his phone on the table.
“My attorney has instructions to preserve every authentic CROWN record we identify.”
Marco turned.
“You did what?”
Dante ignored him.
“Anything proving murder, bribery or financial crimes gets reviewed independently.”
Daniel stared.
“You’d destroy your own family.”
“My father already did.”
“You’re lying.”
Dante unlocked his phone.
He showed a message to outside counsel.
PRESERVE ALL CROWN MATERIAL. NO DESTRUCTION. INDEPENDENT FORENSIC REVIEW.
Daniel read it.
His thumb lowered slightly.
Dante continued.
“But your forged ledger pages don’t become truth because you suffered.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“The organization deserves to fall.”
“Then let it fall for what it actually did.”
Anna covered her mouth.
Marco looked at Dante with something close to disbelief.
Dante had spent his adult life protecting the Moretti name.
Now he was offering it to scrutiny.
Daniel said, “And you?”
“What about me?”
“You think you’re innocent because Salvatore was worse?”
“No.”
“Then what happens to you?”
Dante looked at Marco.
Victor.
Anna.
“I find out what I’m guilty of.”
Daniel laughed once.
“That sounds noble.”
“It isn’t. It’s overdue.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Daniel set the remote on the table.
Marco exhaled.
Anna closed her eyes.
Dante reached for it.
Daniel suddenly grabbed the device again.
“No.”
Marco tensed.
Daniel looked at Dante.
“There’s one thing you don’t know.”
“What?”
“CROWN isn’t Salvatore’s biggest secret.”
Victor went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“There.”
He pointed at him.
“He knows.”
Dante turned.
Victor shook his head.
“Not here.”
Daniel laughed.
“Always protecting him.”
Dante’s voice hardened.
“Victor.”
Victor stared at the scorched walls.
“Salvatore didn’t build CROWN to protect the family from enemies.”
“We know.”
“No.”
Victor’s voice became quieter.
“He built it to survive the families.”
Marco frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Every five-family agreement your father signed included side letters. Secret contingencies.”
Dante felt a new danger emerging.
“What contingencies?”
“If Salvatore died and Moretti power weakened, his private holdings were supposed to transfer through shell trusts.”
“To whom?”
Victor looked at Dante.
“To the other families.”
Silence.
Dante thought of the summit.
The four families he had invited.
The old liabilities.
The estate audit.
Daniel said, “That’s why they wanted today’s meeting.”
Dante stared at him.
“You know?”
“I found the trust index.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“If Dante signed the Harbor Compact, he would have triggered a dormant clause.”
Marco understood first.
“Transfer of assets.”
“Thirty-one percent of Moretti Properties.”
Dante felt cold.
The summit had never only been about peace.
Someone among the five families knew Salvatore’s contingency.
Someone had been waiting for Dante to sign away nearly a third of his legitimate empire.
The tie bug had been planted to confirm whether Dante had discovered the trap before the meeting.
Daniel Pike had been investigating CROWN.
But he had not organized the summit.
He had not needed to.
Someone else had.
The conspiracy had just acquired another layer.
And the people behind it were no longer ghosts from Salvatore’s past.
They were alive.
May you like
Powerful.
And expecting Dante to come back to the table.
