Chapter 15 - Red Hook Seventeen

The warehouse ruins stood behind chain-link fencing near the water.
Red Hook 17 had never been rebuilt.
The city had condemned the structure after the fire.
Marco entered alone.
At least that was what Daniel Pike was meant to believe.
Dante and Victor remained two blocks away inside an unmarked vehicle.
Marco wore no wire.
Pike would detect one.
He carried only Salvatore’s cassette tape and the eagle medallion.
At midnight, a light appeared inside the warehouse.
Marco followed it.
The upper floor was gone.
Rain fell through gaps in the roof.
But a concrete staircase survived.
It led underground.
Marco descended.
Daniel waited in an old utility room.
No gun visible.
He looked younger without a suit.
“Uncle.”
Marco stopped ten feet away.
“You don’t get to call me that yet.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Fair.”
“Anna?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Safe from Victor.”
Marco’s jaw tightened.
“You think Victor killed your father?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because he helped erase him.”
Marco could not argue.
Daniel pointed toward the cassette.
“You brought it.”
“Yes.”
“Play it.”
Marco placed the recorder on a metal table.
Salvatore’s voice filled the room.
Nico saw too much.
I told Cross to clean the warehouse records.
He used fire.
Daniel listened without expression.
When the tape ended, he said, “Again.”
Marco played it again.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“You know what’s strange?”
“What?”
“I spent my whole life imagining his voice.”
“Nico’s?”
Daniel nodded.
“I have no recording.”
Marco’s anger softened against his will.
“He sounded like me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Anna says that.”
“She told you who I was?”
“When I was sixteen.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because you worked for Moretti.”
Marco had no answer.
Daniel continued.
“Anna said Salvatore turned you into one of his dogs.”
Marco flinched.
“She was angry.”
“She was right.”
“Sometimes.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Did you kill for Dante?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help his organization?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know where the money came from?”
“Not all of it.”
“But enough.”
“Yes.”
Daniel nodded.
“I wanted to hate you.”
“Do you?”
“I don’t know.”
For the first time, Marco saw not a strategist but a son standing inside the room where his father died.
“What do you want from me?”
Daniel looked toward the far wall.
“Truth.”
“Then release the real records.”
“The real records don’t punish everyone.”
Marco stared.
There it was.
“Everyone.”
“Victor. Cross. Dante. The families. The companies built with blood.”
“Lily?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I never meant to hurt her.”
“You photographed her.”
“To scare Anna.”
“You planted a device where a child could find it.”
“I didn’t know she would.”
“You tried to move her from the mansion.”
“That was to get her away.”
Marco stepped closer.
“Without her mother’s consent.”
Daniel looked away.
“You sound like Salvatore.”
That struck.
Marco understood the pattern.
Daniel believed righteous purpose excused control.
Exactly as Salvatore had.
“You’re becoming him.”
Daniel’s head snapped back.
“No.”
“You manipulate people. Forge evidence. Use fear. Decide what everyone deserves.”
“I’m exposing murderers.”
“By manufacturing crimes they didn’t commit.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“The money was stolen from criminal companies.”
“You framed me.”
“You protected them.”
Marco shook his head.
“You could have come to me.”
“Would you have believed me?”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t believe Nico.”
“I never knew.”
“You chose not to know.”
Marco went silent.
Daniel had earned that wound.
A sound came from the stairs.
Anna Kessler entered.
Fifty-eight.
Silver in her dark hair.
Thin.
Exhausted.
Marco recognized her instantly.
“Anna.”
She looked at Daniel.
“You lied to me.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mom.”
“You said you only wanted Salvatore’s archive.”
“I did.”
“You put Lily in danger.”
“I never touched her.”
“You became the thing we hated.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.”
Anna’s eyes filled.
“Nico died because men decided the truth mattered less than their mission. You are doing the same.”
Daniel’s calm cracked.
“You wanted revenge too.”
“I wanted proof.”
“You wanted them destroyed.”
“I wanted Salvatore’s name destroyed.”
“He’s dead!”
Daniel’s shout echoed through the room.
“That’s the problem. He died before he had to see what he did.”
Marco looked at the young man.
Now he understood.
CROWN was not the end.
Dante was not even the true target.
Daniel wanted witnesses.
He wanted Salvatore’s surviving world to suffer the knowledge Salvatore had escaped.
Marco said quietly, “Then punish me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Not Lily. Not Elena. Not employees who never knew Nico. Me.”
Dante heard every word from the stairwell.
He had followed despite the agreement.
Daniel saw him.
His face hardened.
“You.”
Dante stepped into the room.
“Yes.”
Daniel reached inside his coat.
Marco moved.
Anna screamed.
But Daniel did not draw a gun.
He drew a small remote control.
His thumb hovered over one button.
Dante stopped.
“What does that do?”
May you like
Daniel smiled without warmth.
“Sends CROWN to everyone.”
