Chapter 12 - The House Beneath the House

Dante sent no one to the pier.

Not immediately.

Instead, he closed the mansion.

Every employee left except Rosa, two trusted guards, Marco, Victor, Elena and Lily.

Then they searched.

Not like criminals looking for money.

Like archaeologists dismantling a dead man’s mind.

Salvatore had renovated the East 74th Street property three times.

Dante obtained the original building plans from city archives.

Elena spread them across the dining table.

Her drafting training became more useful than any weapon in the house.

“This wall is wrong,” she said.

Marco looked.

“Which?”

“The east service corridor.”

She placed the 1998 plan beside the modern renovation plan.

“The room became nine inches shorter.”

Victor shrugged.

“Insulation.”

“No.”

Elena measured.

“Not along one section. Across forty feet.”

Dante stared.

“A false wall.”

They opened it behind the wine cellar.

Inside ran a narrow maintenance passage.

Dusty.

Unlit.

Old electrical cable followed the ceiling.

Lily stayed upstairs with Rosa.

Elena insisted on joining the search.

Dante objected once.

She stared at him.

He stopped objecting.

The passage ended beneath the main staircase.

There they found a steel door.

No handle.

Only another eagle-shaped indentation.

Marco cursed.

“Salvatore really loved himself.”

Victor almost smiled.

Dante used the scorched medallion.

The door opened.

Inside was not a vault.

It was a room.

Small.

Windowless.

Shelves covered three walls.

Most were empty.

A desk stood in the center.

On it sat an old computer and stacks of labeled videotapes.

JUDGES.

PORT AUTHORITY.

FERRARO.

VESCARI.

BELLINI.

ROMANO.

MORETTI.

Marco saw his name.

Victor saw his.

Dante saw his own.

He did not touch any tape.

Elena whispered, “This is CROWN.”

“Part of it.”

Dante opened a drawer.

Empty folders.

Someone had removed files recently.

Another drawer contained an inventory list.

Each category had a location code.

CROWN-A.

CROWN-B.

CROWN-C.

The mansion held CROWN-A.

Financial leverage.

According to the list, CROWN-B contained government contacts.

CROWN-C contained internal family records.

Beside CROWN-C was a location.

RED HOOK 17.

Marco stared.

“The warehouse.”

Victor shook his head.

“It burned.”

“Not all of it.”

Dante looked at the floor plan.

The warehouse fire had destroyed the visible structure.

But shipping facilities often had underground utility rooms.

Nico may have discovered one.

A sound came from the passage.

Metal scraping.

Marco drew his pistol.

The steel door slammed shut behind them.

Darkness.

Elena swore.

Dante hit the emergency light on his phone.

“No signal.”

Victor tried the door.

Locked.

Marco pointed toward the ceiling.

“Ventilation stopped.”

Dante understood.

Pike.

He had never intended them to go to the pier.

He expected them to search the mansion after Anna’s warning.

He had guided them here.

Elena ran her hands along the wall.

“There has to be a manual release.”

Marco found nothing.

Victor sat at Salvatore’s desk.

“Computer.”

“What?”

“Old system. Independent power.”

Dante turned it on.

The screen glowed green.

A password prompt appeared.

Marco laughed bitterly.

“Wonderful.”

Victor typed SALVATORE.

Denied.

Dante tried his mother’s name.

Denied.

Elena looked at the inventory list.

“What would a man like your father think nobody else knew?”

Dante answered immediately.

“That everyone else was stupid.”

Victor looked at him.

“Try Dante.”

Denied.

Marco said, “Nico.”

Denied.

Elena looked at the labels.

BELLINI.

ROMANO.

MORETTI.

Then she said, “Crown.”

Dante typed CROWN.

Denied.

A countdown appeared.

TWO ATTEMPTS REMAINING.

Marco cursed.

Victor stared at the keyboard.

“Your father didn’t trust love. He trusted possession.”

Dante thought of Salvatore’s recorded words.

The boy will think this kingdom belongs to him.

It belongs to whoever can hold it.

He typed KINGDOM.

Denied.

ONE ATTEMPT REMAINING.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Don’t guess.”

The air already felt heavier.

Dante looked at the old tapes.

His father had recorded everyone.

Controlled everyone.

Collected everyone’s sins.

What word had Salvatore used constantly?

Not loyalty.

Loyalty was something he demanded, not believed.

Dante remembered childhood dinners.

Salvatore raising his glass.

Family is blood.

Business is blood.

Fear is blood.

Everything was blood.

Dante typed BLOOD.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The computer opened.

A system menu appeared.

VENTILATION.

LIGHTING.

LOCK CONTROL.

Marco selected unlock.

The door released.

Fresh air entered.

Victor laughed weakly.

Elena leaned against the wall.

Dante did not laugh.

A new file had opened automatically on the screen.

RECENT ACCESS LOG.

Someone had entered CROWN-A at 6:03 that morning.

Minutes before Lily cut the tie.

The access code belonged to Daniel Pike.

But Pike had opened one file only.

MORETTI — DANTE.

And according to the log, he had copied it.

Dante selected the original.

The first page appeared.

His father’s private record of him.

Age nine.

Age twelve.

Age sixteen.

Mistakes.

Relationships.

Weaknesses.

Plans for manipulating him.

At the bottom was a final note recorded before Salvatore’s death.

DANTE’S GREATEST LIABILITY WILL BE MERCY.

Beside it, someone had recently added another line.

LILY PROVED HIM RIGHT.

Dante stared at the screen.

Pike was not merely searching for leverage.

He was studying Dante.

Preparing to use the child as the lever his father had predicted.
