Chapter 14 - The Nephew

Marco vomited in the downstairs bathroom.
Dante waited outside.
Victor sat on the staircase.
Neither spoke.
When Marco emerged, his face was wet.
“I interviewed him.”
Dante nodded.
“I hired him.”
“Yes.”
“I told him he reminded me of my brother.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Marco laughed.
It sounded broken.
“He knew.”
“Probably.”
“He sat across from me for seven years knowing I was his uncle.”
Dante said, “We don’t know what Anna told him.”
Marco’s eyes hardened.
“He knew enough to destroy me.”
The security office recovered Pike’s employment records.
Daniel Pike had been adopted by Richard and Elaine Pike in Pennsylvania.
Both dead.
College at Carnegie Mellon.
Cybersecurity work.
Private contractors.
No criminal record.
At thirty-one, he applied to Moretti Security.
Marco hired him after two interviews.
His access expanded steadily.
Seven years of patience.
Dante looked at the timeline.
“He joined before my father died.”
Victor nodded.
“He came for Salvatore.”
“But Salvatore died naturally.”
Cancer.
Public.
Documented.
No hidden hand.
Pike’s revenge had outlived its original target.
Dante said, “When Salvatore died, Pike stayed.”
Marco understood.
“To get CROWN.”
“And us.”
Victor said, “Anna may not know Daniel is behind everything.”
Marco called her again.
No answer.
Then Elena called Dante.
“Someone sent Lily a package.”
Dante stood.
“Don’t open it.”
“We didn’t.”
“Where?”
“Hotel desk.”
He arrived twenty minutes later.
The package was small.
No return address.
Bomb technicians from a private security firm examined it remotely.
Inside was a wooden music box.
Nothing explosive.
Dante opened it.
A small ballerina turned.
Lily smiled.
Elena did not.
Beneath the mechanism was a note.
ASK MARCO WHAT FAMILY MEANS.
Marco read it.
His face tightened.
Then Lily pointed at the ballerina.
“She has the bird.”
A tiny silver eagle hung from the figurine’s neck.
Marco lifted it carefully.
Another duplicate medallion.
On the underside, engraved initials:
D.P.
Daniel Pike.
Marco whispered, “He wants me to know.”
Elena looked at him.
“Know what?”
“That he’s Nico’s son.”
Dante glanced at Lily.
“We should talk outside.”
Elena shook her head.
“No more whispering around her like she’s furniture. She doesn’t need details, but she knows something is wrong.”
Dante respected that.
Elena knelt.
“Lily, the man from the tailor shop is angry with some grown-ups here. We’re going to keep you safe while they fix it.”
“Is he mad because I cut the tie?”
“No.”
Marco crouched several feet away.
“He’s mad about something that happened a long time ago.”
Lily looked at him.
“Your lightning?”
Marco swallowed.
“Kind of.”
She thought about this.
Then offered him the music box.
“For you.”
Marco almost refused.
Instead he took it.
“Thank you.”
Later, in the hotel corridor, Marco stared through the window at Lexington Avenue.
“He sent that for me.”
“Yes.”
“He could have sent a bullet.”
“Yes.”
“He still wants something.”
“CROWN.”
Marco shook his head.
“No. If he only wanted files, he had seven years of access.”
Dante had considered the same thing.
“What does he want?”
“Us to know.”
“Know what?”
“That Salvatore created him.”
Victor arrived carrying printed records from CROWN.
“He may want public destruction.”
Marco looked at him.
Victor handed Dante a document.
A draft email.
Pike had prepared packages for federal prosecutors, journalists, rival families and Moretti business partners.
Evidence of Salvatore’s crimes.
Some authentic.
Some altered.
If released together, truth and forgery would become nearly impossible to separate.
Dante read the distribution list.
“He can destroy everyone.”
Victor nodded.
“Your companies. Marco. Cross. Me. Half the family alliances.”
Elena stepped into the corridor.
“And maybe that’s the point.”
Dante looked at her.
“If his father died because people protected a criminal empire, he may not care what survives.”
Marco said, “Then why hasn’t he released it?”
Elena answered.
“Because he wants something from you first.”
Marco stared at the eagle medallion in his palm.
His phone vibrated.
A message.
UNCLE.
Marco’s hand shook.
Another message followed.
COME ALONE TO RED HOOK 17.
MIDNIGHT.
BRING SALVATORE’S TAPE.
Dante said, “You’re not going alone.”
Marco looked at him.
“He called me uncle.”
“That changes nothing.”
“It changes everything.”
Marco pocketed the phone.
For fifteen years, Dante had been the man Marco protected.
Now Dante understood the inversion.

The greatest danger was not that Marco would betray him for Daniel Pike.
It was that Marco might willingly die for the nephew he had never known existed.
