Chapter 27 - Leo Meets Tyler Again

At thirty-one, Leo attended community design conference.

Tyler was there representing rehabilitation clinic.

They recognized each other.

Neither expected.

Leo later told me.

“What happened?”

“He said hi.”

“And?”

“I said hi.”

“That’s it?”

“Mostly.”

Then Tyler asked:

“Are we okay?”

Leo answered:

“I don’t know what that means.”

Good.

Tyler corrected:

“Fair.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Leo said:

“I know.”

Not forgiveness declaration.

Then they attended separate sessions.

Later shared elevator.

Awkward.

No cinematic hug.

Leo told me:

“I realized I wasn’t scared.”

That mattered.

Not because Tyler became harmless angel.

Because Leo’s body no longer returned automatically to seventh grade.

He felt adult.

Free.

Then:

“I think I forgave him.”

“Okay.”

“But I don’t want friendship.”

“Also okay.”

Different.

Then Leo laughed:

“He still hates tomato soup.”

I laughed until tears.

History had become joke small enough not to hurt.
