Chapter 22 - Maria’s Question

Maria Santos asked me over coffee years later:

“Do you ever think what if camera wasn’t there?”

Yes.

Too often.

Would Higgins have believed Tyler?

Probably.

Would phone videos show enough?

Maybe not.

Would I have been fired?

Possible.

Would Leo’s report history remain hidden?

Likely longer.

That frightened me.

Maria said:

“That means camera saved us.”

“Partly.”

Then:

“But what about kids without camera?”

Exactly.

We cannot make justice depend on luck.

So Maria joined district parent advisory council after Leo graduated.

Not because she owed cause.

She wanted.

She pushed language-access, work-hour-friendly meetings, remote complaint options.

Why?

Parents working nights should not be easier to ignore.

Tyler targeted Leo partly because mother busy.

System reform included family access.

Maria said:

“I used to think not attending PTA meant school saw me as less involved.”

“They did sometimes.”

“Yes.”

She fixed.

Then district scheduled rotating meeting times.

Childcare.

Translation.

Small.

Power access.

Then Maria met Grant at one meeting.

Awkward.

He apologized again.

She said:

“You already did.”

He stopped.

Good.

Repeated apology can become burden.

Then they worked on separate agenda.

No friendship.

Functional civic relationship.

May you like

That was progress.
