Chapter 19 - Grant and His Sons

Five years after incident, Grant Mercer attended Westbridge fundraiser as ordinary guest.

No board pin.

Nathan was now working in urban planning.

Tyler studying occupational therapy.

Both came.

I saw them together.

Grant approached cafeteria table.

“Grace.”

“Grant.”

First names now.

He asked:

“Can I tell you something weird?”

“Sure.”

“My sons argue with me more.”

“Congratulations?”

He laughed.

“They tell me no.”

“That sounds healthy.”

“Apparently.”

Then he said:

“I used to think respect meant they followed my advice.”

“What now?”

“I think sometimes it means they trust me enough not to.”

Growth.

Then Tyler approached.

He and I nodded.

No long apology.

Past already addressed.

Nathan asked about Jordan.

I said:

“Not your business unless Jordan chooses.”

He nodded.

They had never reconciled.

Nathan accepted.

Some harms do not become friendships.

Then Grant looked toward athletic center, now without his name.

“I thought giving money meant belonging.”

I said:

“You belonged as parent.”

He sighed.

“I wanted more.”

Power as security.

Then:

“I made Tyler think name was shield.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

No more.

They left.

I did not feel warm redemption.

Just less anger.

Enough.

Then fundraiser raised money for free breakfast program.

Grant donated.

Anonymous? Public transparent name because hiding donor can also create influence. The donation listed normally, no naming rights.

Good.

Money can be useful without buying control.

May you like

That was healthier.
