Chapter 26 - Grace Retires

I retired after twenty-two years.

Cafeteria staff tried throw surprise party.

I discovered because nobody can hide cake from lunch lady.

Leo came.

Now twenty-nine.

Graphic designer.

Maria too.

Principal Shaw.

Renee Clark.

Jonah.

Even Dr. Nair.

No Grant.

No Tyler.

Not because banned.

Party was mine.

I chose.

Leo gave framed copy of cartoon:

EVIDENCE ONLY MATTERS IF SOMEONE ACTS.

This time I accepted frame.

Not camera.

Idea.

Then speech.

I hate speeches.

I said:

“I spent career feeding students.”

“That was job.”

“Sometimes job meant noticing who stopped eating.”

Room quiet.

“Do that.”

“Whatever your job.”

“If you are secretary, teacher, custodian, coach, parent, cafeteria worker—notice.”

“Titles don’t decide who gets to see truth.”

Then:

“And please stop calling tomato soup dangerous.”

Laughter.

Done.

After party, I walked cafeteria once.

Stainless counters.

New warming station.

No famous stain.

Leo joined.

“Ready?”

“Yes.”

“Regret retiring?”

“Ask tomorrow.”

He smiled.

Then:

“You know Tyler emailed me once.”

I stopped.

“When?”

“College.”

“Did you answer?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Last year I did.”

I waited.

“What’d you say?”

“Hope you’re doing well.”

“That’s all.”

“Yes.”

His choice.

No forced reconciliation.

Then:

“He said same.”

That was enough.
