Chapter 27 - Richard’s Foundation

The Vance Athletic Foundation faced a choice.
Dissolve.
Or reform.
Richard stepped down.
An independent board took control.
No Vance family majority.
Donations would continue, but without disciplinary influence.
The foundation renamed itself the Oak Creek Student Athletics Fund.
Richard contributed the remaining pledged money without naming rights.
One board member asked why.
Richard answered:
“Because generosity that requires control is a purchase.”
Martha later heard the quote.

She approved.
Quietly.
