Chapter 23 - Tyler’s Letter

Three months after the hearing, Martha received a letter.

She almost returned it unopened.

Then saw the court-approved program seal.

Tyler wrote:

I used to think you hated me.

Martha continued.

Now I think you were probably the only adult at school who told me no before it became impossible to ignore me.

He admitted knowing Leo was frightened.

Admitted planning the cafeteria humiliation.

Admitted telling friends when to start filming.

Then:

I kept thinking the camera ruined my life. My counselor asked what would have happened if there was no camera. I said nothing. He asked if that was the problem.

Martha paused.

That was the first sentence that sounded like growth.

Tyler did not ask forgiveness.

Good.

He wrote:

I am sorry I grabbed your apron and tried to make you look dangerous when I was the one creating the danger.

Martha folded the letter.

She did not respond immediately.

Weeks later she sent one sentence through the program.

May you like

What you become next matters more than what you say about what happened.

Nothing else.
