Chapter 18 - The Criminal Case

Prosecutors reviewed the cafeteria footage.
Tyler’s conduct toward Martha supported assault-related charges.
His conduct toward Leo supported additional review.
Martha gave a statement.
The prosecutor asked:
“What outcome do you want?”
“I’m not the judge.”
“I understand.”
“I want him to stop believing every consequence is an attack.”
The prosecutor nodded.
Tyler eventually accepted a plea agreement involving assault, probation, counseling, community service, and restrictions on contacting Martha and Leo.
The exact charges reflected local law and evidence.
He avoided incarceration beyond processing.
Some community members called it too lenient.
Others called any charge too harsh.
Martha ignored both camps.
Justice was not a popularity contest.
The most meaningful requirement, in her view, was participation in a restorative education program only if victims consented.
Leo declined.
