Chapter 19 - Judith’s Last Lie

They reached Lakeshore shortly before midnight.

Judith’s car was parked near the boathouse.

Rain had begun.

The upstairs lights burned.

Nicole entered first with Officer Ruiz.

“Judith?”

No answer.

They found her in the room where teenage Daniel had split twenty-two years earlier.

The mirror stood uncovered.

Judith faced it.

“Step away,” Ruiz ordered.

Judith laughed softly.

“Police.”

She turned.

“Thomas tried police once. They thought he was insane.”

Daniel entered.

“Mom.”

Judith looked at him.

Then Sweater Daniel.

Pain crossed her face.

“You brought him.”

“He came.”

“He always comes.”

Nicole frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Judith looked toward the mirror.

“My other self never disappeared.”

Silence.

Daniel whispered, “What?”

“The dark-dress Judith.”

Nicole felt cold.

“You said Thomas chose you.”

“He did.”

“And she vanished.”

“I thought she did.”

Judith touched the mirror.

“For years afterward I saw her.”

“In reflections?”

“At first.”

Judith’s voice trembled.

“Then in dreams.”

Daniel said, “That doesn’t mean she survived.”

“No.”

Judith looked at Nicole.

“But twelve years ago I received a letter.”

She handed Nicole a folded page.

No signature.

You kept the life. I kept the truth.

Nicole studied it.

“Who sent this?”

“I don’t know.”

Another letter came three years later.

Then another.

Each contained information only Judith knew.

Monica examined the postmarks.

Different states.

Sweater Daniel whispered, “She got out.”

Daniel stared.

“An independent duplicate?”

Judith nodded.

“Thomas never knew.”

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

“Because by then his cancer had returned.”

Nicole saw through it.

“And because it would prove he was wrong.”

Judith’s eyes hardened.

“Yes.”

Thomas believed only one version could remain after nine days.

But Judith had evidence that her duplicate survived somewhere for decades.

Sweater Daniel stared at her.

“So I can live.”

“Maybe.”

Hope transformed his face.

Daniel saw it too.

Nicole asked, “Why bring the mirror here?”

Judith looked toward her reflection.

“Because the letters stopped eight years ago.”

“When Thomas died?”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I think the other me came back.”

Daniel whispered, “Where?”

Judith’s reflection moved.

Judith did not.

Everyone froze.

Inside the glass, Reflection Judith smiled.

Real Judith began shaking.

“No.”

The reflection lifted its hand.

On one finger was the Anderson signet ring.

But the real ring lay in Daniel’s pocket.

Nicole’s breath caught.

Reflection Judith spoke.

No sound came from the room.

Yet everyone heard her.

You blamed me for telling the truth.

Judith backed away.

“No.”

The reflection continued.

Then you became every lie you accused me of exposing.

Judith screamed and picked up a metal candleholder.

She swung at the mirror.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“Stop!”

“Break it!”

“No!”

Judith fought him.

Sweater Daniel helped restrain her.

For one surreal moment, two identical sons held their mother while she screamed at her own face.

Nicole stepped toward the glass.

“Who are you?”

Reflection Judith looked at her.

Then smiled sadly.

Someone she refused to become.

The image vanished.

Judith collapsed.

Rain hammered the windows.

Nicole crouched near her.

“Did you steal $1.76 million?”

Judith cried.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“I was building an escape.”

“From what?”

She looked at both versions of him.

“This family.”

Daniel laughed brokenly.

“You controlled everything.”

“That doesn’t mean I felt free.”

Nicole said, “You could have left.”

Judith stared at her.

“With what identity? Thomas’s wife? Daniel’s mother? Anderson chairwoman?”

Sweater Daniel whispered, “You understand exactly how I feel.”

Judith looked at him.

And began crying harder.

For the first time, she saw him not as an intruder but as a person whose identity had been defined by others.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

He did not forgive her.

But he nodded.

A beginning.

Then Monica shouted from downstairs.

“Nicole!”

They ran.

Monica stood beside Thomas’s old computer.

Another dead-man file had activated.

Title:

THE SURVIVOR.

Inside was a photograph dated 2018.

Thomas sat beside a woman.

Judith.

Except the real Judith was standing behind them.

Daniel looked between the photograph and his mother.

“Who is that?”

Judith whispered, “I don’t know.”

Nicole studied the woman in the photograph.

Dark dress.

Same face.

Older.

May you like

Thomas had found Judith’s duplicate before he died.

And he had hidden that from everyone.
