Chapter 18 - The Choice Nobody Expected

Daniel wanted to believe the reflection was a warning.

Sweater Daniel believed it was manipulation.

Nicole believed neither interpretation deserved trust.

“We keep treating the mirror like an oracle,” she said.

They stood in the living room where the nightmare had begun.

“It isn’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You saw an older version of yourself.”

“I saw an image.”

Sweater Daniel nodded slowly.

“What do we know?”

Nicole appreciated the question.

“Thomas said the Witness represented a possible endpoint.”

“Not the future,” Daniel said.

“Exactly.”

Nicole looked at both men.

“The message said don’t choose either.”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“What does that mean to you?”

“That I stop making my life about which version of you deserves to remain my husband.”

Silence.

Sweater Daniel lowered his eyes.

Doorway Daniel whispered, “Are you leaving me?”

Nicole took a long breath.

“Yes.”

The word landed cleanly.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“You mean temporarily.”

“No.”

“Nikki.”

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“I love you.”

Her eyes filled.

“That’s what makes this hard.”

Sweater Daniel turned away.

Nicole continued.

“I can love you and refuse to stay married to someone who forged my signature, planned to manipulate me and risked my home without consent.”

Daniel cried quietly.

“I’m changing.”

“I hope you do.”

“You said people can change.”

“They can.”

“Then why doesn’t that matter?”

“It matters for who you become.”

Nicole’s voice trembled.

“It does not erase what I need now.”

Daniel looked broken.

“Can I earn you back?”

Nicole shook her head.

“Don’t make your accountability another strategy for getting a reward.”

He stared at her.

That sentence reached him.

Slowly, Daniel nodded.

Sweater Daniel looked at Nicole.

“And me?”

She turned.

“You are not my husband.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I remember being him.”

“I know.”

“I remember marrying you.”

“I know.”

“I remember loving you.”

Nicole fought tears.

“I know.”

His voice broke.

“Then what am I supposed to do with that?”

“I don’t know.”

She stepped closer, but not too close.

“But I will help you find an answer that does not require owning my life.”

He nodded.

For the first time, neither Daniel argued.

Nicole had done what the older reflection instructed.

She chose neither.

The effect on the house was immediate.

The overhead chandelier flickered.

The mirror cracked loudly from corner to corner.

Daniel moved toward Nicole.

She raised a hand.

He stopped himself.

Growth, tiny but visible.

The crack spread.

Then stopped.

Sweater Daniel touched his chest.

“What?”

Nicole asked.

He looked stunned.

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“The apartment bedroom.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Memory came back?”

“Yes.”

Thomas had assumed divergence only moved in one direction.

Maybe his theory was incomplete.

Monica arrived carrying food and bad news.

“The forensic audit found something.”

They gathered around the dining table.

Anderson Urban Renewal had not merely concealed environmental contamination.

For seven years, Judith had diverted consulting payments to a company called Briar Holdings.

Total:

$1.76 million.

Daniel looked stunned.

“Briar?”

Nicole recognized the name.

Briarwood Lane.

Monica nodded.

“Briar Holdings owns a private investment account.”

“Who controls it?”

Monica turned the laptop.

Beneficial owner:

JUDITH M. ANDERSON.

Daniel whispered, “She stole from the company.”

Not hundreds.

Millions.

Nicole thought of Judith lecturing everyone about sacrifice.

The financial crisis might not have happened at all if the money remained.

Daniel called his mother.

She did not answer.

Again.

Nothing.

They drove to Judith’s home.

Front door unlocked.

Lights on.

No Judith.

On the dining table lay the Anderson signet ring.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

I will not let the mirror judge me again.

Daniel picked up the ring.

Monica whispered, “Where would she go?”

Sweater Daniel answered immediately.

“Lakeshore.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because if she thinks this began there…”

Nicole finished.

“She’ll try to end it there.”

Outside, thunder rolled.

Another storm was coming.

May you like

Day five had begun.

And Judith had taken the third mirror.
