Chapter 1 - The Husband at the Door

At 10:47 p.m., Nicole Anderson heard her husband upstairs.
She knew Daniel’s footsteps better than she knew the ticking of the antique clock beside the fireplace: three measured steps across their bedroom, a pause near the dresser, then the softer creak where the hallway floorboard bowed beneath his weight.
Outside, rain hammered the tall windows of their suburban home.
Nicole sat curled into the corner of the cream sofa, her phone balanced against one knee. Her younger sister Monica filled the video screen, talking rapidly about a disastrous dinner date.
Nicole barely listened.
“You still there?” Monica asked.
Nicole smiled.
“Daniel’s home.”
“I thought he was at the office.”
“He must’ve gotten back without me hearing him.”
A shadow moved across the open upper hallway.
Then Daniel’s voice floated down.
“Honey! I’ll be right down!”
Nicole glanced toward the staircase.
“See?”
Monica rolled her eyes. “Tell him he still owes me twenty dollars from Christmas.”
“Tell her I heard that!” Daniel shouted from upstairs.
Nicole laughed.
Then the front-door lock clicked.
The sound was small.
Ordinary.
Impossible.
Nicole’s smile disappeared.
The door opened inward, carrying a blade of cold blue rainlight across the hardwood floor.
Daniel walked inside.
He wore his dark navy raincoat, soaked through at the shoulders. Water dripped from his hair. His gray shirt clung slightly to his chest. His car keys jingled in his right hand.
“Hey, babe,” he said.
Nicole did not move.
Daniel shut the door.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Nicole’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“But…”
Her voice came out thin.
“You’re upstairs.”
For half a second Daniel looked confused.
Then afraid.
“What are you talking about?”
From above them came Daniel’s voice.
Exactly Daniel’s voice.
“Nicole?”
The man near the entrance went rigid.
Upstairs, the voice continued.
“Who came in?”
Monica screamed through the phone.
“NICOLE, GET OUT!”
Nicole stared at her husband.
Or the man who looked like him.
Daniel’s blue eyes moved slowly toward the staircase.
“Nikki,” he whispered, “come here.”
She backed away from him.
“No.”
The upstairs floor creaked.
Someone appeared at the landing.
Nicole stopped breathing.
Same height.
Same shoulders.
Same short brown hair.
Same beard.
Same blue eyes.
Same face she had kissed that morning.
But this Daniel wore a charcoal sweater and dark lounge pants.
He rested one hand on the banister.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Lightning illuminated the hallway.
Nicole looked from one Daniel to the other.
The doorway Daniel dropped his keys.
“That’s not me.”
The upstairs Daniel smiled.
It was not a monstrous smile.
That frightened Nicole more.
It was Daniel’s familiar, gentle smile—the one he used when she woke from nightmares.
“Nicole,” the upstairs man said calmly, “he’s not your husband.”
“Don’t listen to him,” the man near the door snapped.
The upstairs Daniel descended one step.
Doorway Daniel moved toward Nicole.
She recoiled.
“Stay away from me!”
Both men stopped.
They stopped at precisely the same moment.
Their expressions changed almost identically.
Concern.
Pain.
Calculation.
Nicole’s heartbeat slammed in her ears.
“Monica,” she whispered.
“I’m recording,” Monica said. “Nicole, call 911.”
The upstairs Daniel’s gaze dropped toward the large antique mirror hanging opposite the staircase.
Something about his expression changed.
Fear.
Not of the other Daniel.
Of the mirror.
Nicole saw it.
“So you know,” she said.
Both Daniels looked at her.
“Know what?” Doorway Daniel asked.
The upstairs man’s jaw tightened.
Thunder shook the windows.
The lights died.
Nicole screamed.
Someone grabbed her wrist.
Another voice shouted her name.
Furniture crashed.
Monica screamed from the phone.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Nicole stood beside the sofa, gasping.
Doorway Daniel had retreated toward the entrance.
Upstairs Daniel was halfway down the staircase.
Neither was touching her.
Yet Nicole’s wrist burned where fingers had closed around it.
“Which one of you did that?”
Both men answered simultaneously.
“Not me.”
Nicole stared at them.
The same voice.
The same cadence.
The same frightened crease between the eyebrows.
Then she noticed something else.
The wall mirror behind them had fogged from the inside.
Letters appeared slowly across the glass.
Not written by any visible hand.
Five words.
Daniel saw them too.
His face drained of color.
Nicole stepped closer.
The message finished forming.
ONE OF YOU ALREADY LIED.
Doorway Daniel whispered, “Oh, God.”
Nicole turned sharply.
“You recognize that?”
“No.”
“You just reacted.”
“I reacted because words appeared on our mirror!”
But the upstairs Daniel was no longer smiling.
He looked devastated.
Nicole had seen Daniel ashamed before.
Never like this.
“What did you do?” she asked.
Neither answered.
Nicole’s phone vibrated violently in her hand.
Monica had sent something.
A screenshot.
Nicole opened it.
During the blackout, Monica’s recording had captured a single frozen frame.
Nicole stood between both Daniels.
But in the mirror behind them, there were not two reflections of Daniel.
There were three.
May you like
The third Daniel stood directly behind Nicole.
And his hands were resting on her shoulders.
