Chapter 13 - Consequences

By Friday morning, Daniel Anderson was no longer CEO.

His resignation shocked the board.

Judith tried to stop it.

She failed.

Nicole, acting as independent trustee of the Thomas Anderson Family Foundation, approved a structured sale of five acres from Lakeshore to a conservation consortium for $2.4 million.

It was enough to fund payroll and critical operations without liquidating the entire property.

Rachel designed conditions.

No money could be used for executive bonuses.

No Helix control deal.

Independent forensic audit.

Immediate environmental disclosure.

Judith’s suspension pending review.

Restitution of Nicole’s $42,000.

Daniel accepted every condition.

Judith called Nicole vindictive.

Nicole replied, “Accountability always feels personal to people who expected immunity.”

The sentence ended the conversation.

For the first time in days, Nicole thought the crisis might become manageable.

Then Sweater Daniel disappeared.

He had been staying in Lakeshore’s guesthouse because Nicole refused to place him near Doorway Daniel overnight.

At 6:12 a.m., Monica found the room empty.

No broken windows.

No footprints.

The bed had not been slept in.

On the mirror above the dresser, written in condensation:

I REMEMBER WHAT HE DOESN’T.

Nicole immediately called Doorway Daniel.

“I’m at the hotel,” he said.

“Stay there.”

“What happened?”

“The other you is gone.”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered, “Nicole.”

“What?”

“I had a dream.”

Her skin prickled.

“About what?”

“Being seventeen.”

“The accident?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“A basement.”

Nicole gripped the phone.

“What basement?”

“Not Briarwood.”

Daniel breathed shakily.

“Lakeshore.”

Nicole looked toward the house.

“There is no basement.”

“I know.”

They searched.

At first, they found nothing.

Then Monica noticed metal rings embedded beneath an old rug in the pantry.

They lifted a hatch.

Stone steps descended into darkness.

Nicole almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Your family has too many secret rooms.”

Daniel arrived with Ruiz thirty minutes later.

They entered together.

The chamber below was narrow.

Concrete walls.

One table.

One chair.

No mirror.

On the table lay photographs.

Dozens.

Teenage Daniel.

Thomas.

Judith.

And a fourth person.

Nicole picked up the clearest photograph.

A teenage boy identical to Daniel sat in the chair.

His hands were not restrained.

But he looked terrified.

On the back Thomas had written:

D2 — retained 31 hours. Increasing divergence.

Doorway Daniel whispered, “D2.”

Nicole felt sick.

The second Daniel from 2004 had not disappeared immediately.

Thomas had kept him here.

Another photograph showed Thomas speaking with the boy.

Another showed Judith.

In that image, she stood near the door.

The boy was crying.

Monica found an audio cassette.

They played it.

Thomas’s voice.

“Thirty-one hours since manifestation.”

Then teenage Daniel’s voice.

“Dad, please.”

Nicole’s chest tightened.

Thomas said, “I need to understand what happens.”

“You said I could go.”

“I said when it was safe.”

“I am Daniel.”

Thomas became emotional.

“I know.”

The boy whispered, “Then why is he upstairs with Mom?”

No one in the basement moved.

The recording continued.

Thomas asked memory questions.

The boy answered everything.

Then Judith entered.

Her voice was cold.

“This has gone too far.”

Thomas said, “He is conscious.”

“He is an event.”

“He’s our son.”

“No.”

The teenage boy began crying.

“Mom.”

Judith said, “Stop calling me that.”

Adult Daniel backed against the wall.

Nicole watched him.

The cruelty had shaped something inside him even though he could not consciously remember it.

Thomas argued with Judith.

Finally she said, “If you will not end this, I will.”

The tape cut off.

Nicole whispered, “End what?”

Daniel looked terrified.

They searched the room.

Behind a cabinet, Monica found a dark stain on the floor.

Not blood.

Burn damage.

A circular scorch mark.

Daniel whispered, “The mirror.”

Nicole looked at him.

“What?”

“This is where it stood.”

He suddenly remembered.

His knees buckled.

“I was upstairs.”

Nicole caught his arm.

“I heard screaming.”

“What screaming?”

Daniel stared at the empty scorch mark.

“My own.”

His face collapsed.

“My mother made me come down.”

Nicole’s pulse hammered.

“She told me the other boy wasn’t real.”

Daniel’s breathing became ragged.

“She made me tell him.”

“Tell him what?”

“That I was Daniel.”

Nicole froze.

“And?”

“That he was nothing.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel whispered, “Then Dad turned the mirror toward him.”

Nicole realized what Thomas had done.

He had not merely studied the phenomenon.

He had participated in erasing his own son’s duplicate.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Sweater Daniel’s voice came from the stairway.

“That’s what I remembered.”

Everyone turned.

He stood above them.

May you like

His face was wet with tears.

“And now I remember what happened after.”
