Chapter 5 - Sofia’s Other SecretSofia had one secret she had not told Adrian.

Her father had warned her about Michael twelve years earlier.
Rafael Marquez had been a marine engineer who consulted on the first Port Azure expansion.
He died three years before Sofia married Alejandro.
Among his papers was a handwritten note:
Michael Serrano asks questions like an owner, but signs nothing like one. Watch the side companies.
Sofia had dismissed it.
At the time Michael was simply Alejandro’s charismatic university friend.
The note meant little.
After the duplicate foundation payment appeared, she remembered.
She searched her father’s storage boxes.
There she found an old Port Azure feasibility report.
Michael’s father, Esteban Serrano, once owned eighteen percent of a predecessor shipping venture with Alejandro’s father, Carlos Valera.
Family legend said Carlos had forced Esteban out.
Michael had repeated that story often.
“My father built half the company your father stole,” he once told Alejandro jokingly.
Except Rafael’s papers contained the sale documents.
Esteban had sold voluntarily.
Why?
His own logistics company had failed.
He needed liquidity.
Carlos paid market value.
Michael’s grievance had been built on a distorted family story.
But Rafael’s notes contained something else.
Esteban later tried to buy back in.
Carlos refused.
Michael grew up believing his family had been humiliated.
Sofia brought the documents to Adrian.
“Does this matter legally?”
“Maybe not.”
“Then why does it feel important?”
“Because motive matters psychologically.”
Michael wasn't only stealing money.
He was rewriting history.
Each Bellrose transfer felt, to him, like repayment.
Each share he gained from Diego looked like restoration.
Port Azure was symbolic.
Esteban had once wanted that terminal.
Michael planned to own what he believed Valeras had denied his father.
That did not excuse anything.
But it made his behavior coherent.
Sofia asked:
“Could Alejandro’s father have hidden something else?”
Adrian shrugged.
“Possible.”
They verified rather than guessed.
Bank archives.
Sale records.
Correspondence.
Everything supported a legitimate buyout.
Michael’s mother, Beatrice, had apparently told Michael the opposite for decades.
Why?
Pride.
It was easier to tell a son his father was robbed than admit Esteban’s business failed.
A family lie became a man’s grievance.
The grievance became motive.
The motive became crime.
Sofia stared at the old sale agreement.
“Does Michael know this exists?”
“Probably not.”
“Then we give it to investigators.”
Adrian nodded.
Sofia made four copies.
No hidden aquarium this time.
One to Torres.
One to federal investigators.
One to outside counsel.
One stored independently.
She had learned.
That evening Alejandro called.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
“What?”
“I found your father’s name in Port Azure records.”
Sofia froze.
“Where?”
“In a 2014 engineering arbitration.”
“My father was dead by then.”
“The case referenced his work.”
“What about it?”
Alejandro paused.
“There was a safety report.”
“I've never seen one.”
“Neither have I.”
“What did it say?”
“That Port Azure’s northern berth shouldn't be expanded without reinforcing the seawall.”
Sofia frowned.
The acquisition plan Michael pushed depended on northern berth expansion.
“Who removed the restriction?”
“An amended engineering certificate in 2019.”
“Signed by?”
Alejandro answered.
“Rafael Marquez.”
Sofia stood.
“My father died in 2013.”
Silence.
Someone had forged her dead father’s signature six years after his death.
And Michael’s Port Azure plan depended on it.
The conspiracy was no longer just financial.
It involved falsified safety documentation.
Sofia felt cold.
“Send it to Torres.”
“I already did.”
She paused.
A week earlier Alejandro would have confronted Michael privately.
Now he sent evidence first.
She noticed.
Did not praise him.
Change did not erase harm.
But evidence deserved recognition.
“Thank you.”
Alejandro was quiet.
Then:
“Sofia.”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
She closed her eyes.
“We are not there yet.”
“I know.”
“Goodnight.”
She ended call.
Then she looked at her father’s photograph beside desk.
Rafael had left clues.
Michael had spent years building a story about what families owed him.
Now he had forged a dead man's signature to make that story profitable.
And Sofia finally understood why Michael had become frightened when she began asking about Port Azure.

She had not merely discovered stolen money.
She had discovered that the terminal deal itself rested on a lie.
