Chapter 2 - The Man Outside the HotelSofia refused to return to Alejandro’s bedroom.

She refused his private doctor.

She refused the attorney he offered.

When Miami-Dade detectives arrived, she gave her statement without asking her husband’s permission.

That mattered.

Detective Rachel Torres listened while Sofia described Michael’s accusation, Alejandro’s interrogation, the guards and the aquarium.

Alejandro sat fifteen feet away beside his attorney.

He did not interrupt.

Not once.

When Torres finished, she turned toward him.

“You ordered the guards to place your wife inside that tank?”

Alejandro glanced at his lawyer.

Then answered.

“Yes.”

“Did you know the animals were venomous?”

“Yes.”

The attorney shifted.

Alejandro continued before he could be stopped.

“I believed the safety divider would protect her.”

Torres stared.

“You believed?”

Alejandro looked toward Sofia.

She did not look back.

Torres wrote something.

The black capsule was taken into evidence.

Before surrendering it, Sofia asked that its contents be copied under warrant and preserved.

The mysterious man from the hotel was identified that night.

Adrian Cole.

Forty-two.

Forensic accountant.

Former federal financial investigator.

No criminal record.

No romantic connection to Sofia.

His first meeting with her had occurred four months earlier.

Why?

The Valera Foundation.

Sofia chaired the charitable foundation connected to Alejandro’s companies.

One hospital renovation had been billed twice.

At first, she thought it was an administrative error.

Then she found the duplicate payment had gone through a company called Blue Harbor Logistics.

Blue Harbor had no trucks.

No warehouse.

No employees.

Only a registered address in Delaware.

Sofia hired Adrian privately.

Within three weeks he found two more shell companies.

Caldera Risk.

Mariner Advisory.

Money moved through all three.

Eventually it reached Bellrose Holdings.

Adrian told Torres:

“Bellrose is where the structure gets interesting.”

“Who owns it?”

“Officially, a family trust.”

“Which family?”

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Then answered:

“Michael’s.”

Michael had been Alejandro’s closest friend for twenty-three years.

He served as strategic adviser to Valera Maritime Holdings.

He sat beside Alejandro at family dinners.

He was godfather to Diego’s eldest son.

He had keys to the mansion.

Alejandro trusted him enough to believe one sentence about Sofia without evidence.

Torres asked Adrian:

“Why didn't you tell Mr. Valera?”

Adrian replied:

“Because someone inside Valera security was monitoring Sofia’s access.”

Every time she downloaded suspicious records, somebody checked the same file shortly afterward.

Adrian believed an internal warning system existed.

So they met away from Valera properties.

Hotels.

Parking structures.

Coffee shops.

Always in public.

Michael saw one meeting.

He did not see affection because there was none.

But he did see opportunity.

Sofia asked Adrian:

“What happened to the drive?”

“I gave it to Diego.”

Alejandro turned sharply.

“You gave evidence to my brother?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Your wife asked me to create three copies.”

“One went to her attorney. One stayed with me. One went to a person who claimed he wanted to help.”

“Diego?”

“Yes.”

Sofia looked stunned.

“I never told you to give Diego one.”

Adrian frowned.

“He said you did.”

The room changed.

“Who contacted you?” Torres asked.

Adrian pulled out his phone.

A message thread.

The account appeared to be Sofia’s.

But the number was wrong by one digit.

Someone had impersonated her.

That person told Adrian to give the duplicate drive to Diego Valera.

Adrian did.

Diego later said it had been stolen from his office.

Yet now it had emerged from Alejandro’s aquarium.

Torres looked toward the evidence bag.

“Someone wanted that drive hidden.”

Sofia said:

“Or preserved.”

Alejandro frowned.

“What?”

“If Michael wanted it destroyed, why put it somewhere recoverable?”

No one answered.

Then Torres’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her face became serious.

“Mr. Valera, where is Michael now?”

Alejandro glanced at clock.

“He was supposed to be at Port Azure with Diego.”

Torres ended call.

“He isn’t.”

“What happened?”

“Michael’s office was emptied tonight.”

Alejandro stood.

His lawyer touched his arm.

“Sit.”

Torres continued:

“Computers removed. Paper files gone. His corporate phone disconnected.”

Sofia looked at Alejandro.

The affair accusation had done exactly what Michael needed.

It had turned Alejandro against the one person asking questions.

Alejandro finally understood.

“He knew.”

Sofia nodded.

“He knew you.”

That distinction hurt more.

Michael had not needed proof that Sofia was unfaithful.

May you like

He had only needed Alejandro’s pride.

And Alejandro had provided everything else.
