Chapter 10 - Port AzurePort Azure deal collapsed.

Valera Maritime invoked fraud provisions.

Breakup fee went to arbitration.

Michael’s affiliated lender was frozen.

Victor Kane began cooperating.

Without the acquisition, Michael lost his largest financial exit.

But the terminal itself remained unstable.

The forged engineering certificate meant expansion approval could be revoked.

Sofia’s father’s original warning became central.

Engineers reinspected seawall.

They found deterioration.

Not imminent collapse.

But enough that reinforcement was necessary before expansion.

Michael had risked workers and infrastructure to inflate valuation.

Alejandro learned during independent board briefing.

He stared at Rafael Marquez’s original report.

Sofia’s father had been right twelve years earlier.

Alejandro had met Rafael twice.

Quiet man.

Never impressed by wealth.

Alejandro remembered him telling Sofia at their engagement dinner:

“Power does not make bad information true.”

At the time Alejandro had smiled politely.

Now the sentence felt aimed through years.

The board canceled expansion assumptions.

Port Azure valuation fell.

Michael’s surrounding land options lost much of speculative value.

His scheme unraveled not because Alejandro defeated him—

but because reality refused to cooperate forever.

Concrete deteriorates.

Signatures have dates.

Bank transfers leave trails.

People talk.

Alejandro had built business career on forcing outcomes.

Now he watched evidence do what force could not.

Sofia was invited to an independent engineering briefing because Rafael’s estate retained intellectual-property rights in some original designs.

There she discovered another surprise.

Her father had been owed deferred consulting royalties if Port Azure ever expanded beyond original berth capacity.

The amount could have reached $3.6 million.

Upon Rafael’s death, those rights passed to Sofia and her sister, Lucia.

Michael’s expansion plan included a forged waiver.

Another stolen signature.

Not just technical fraud.

He intended to erase her family’s contractual claim.

Sofia stared at waiver.

Her name appeared beneath Rafael’s estate.

She had never signed.

Now Michael’s focus on her made even more sense.

She was not merely investigator.

She was a financial obstacle.

Adrian said:

“He probably expected Alejandro to convince you to sign eventually.”

“And if I didn't?”

“He had this.”

Forgery.

Sofia asked:

“Did Alejandro know about royalties?”

“No evidence.”

She believed him.

Not because love.

Because records.

That distinction became her new standard.

Lucia flew from Boston.

She had always disliked Alejandro.

When she heard aquarium story, she refused to speak to him.

She hugged Sofia and said:

“You’re never going back.”

Sofia stiffened.

“That’s my decision.”

Lucia stopped.

Then nodded.

“Sorry.”

Control can arrive disguised as protection too.

Sofia noticed it everywhere now.

She loved sister.

Still set boundary.

They agreed pursue Rafael’s royalties through estate counsel.

Independent from Valera.

No favors.

No family settlement.

Michael’s attorneys offered to repay full royalties if Sofia would support bail modification.

She laughed.

“No.”

Consequences were not bargaining chips.

At the mansion, Mateo informed Alejandro the snakes would be transferred to a licensed marine research facility.

“Why?”

“Because I’m retiring.”

Alejandro looked surprised.

“You've been here thirty years.”

“Thirty-one.”

“Why now?”

Mateo looked at empty hall.

“Because I don't want my life's work remembered as your punishment device.”

Alejandro lowered eyes.

“I understand.”

“Good.”

He did not offer more money.

Another difference.

Mateo continued:

“The aquarium should go too.”

Alejandro looked at massive wall.

It had once symbolized wealth.

Control.

Rare animals contained behind glass.

He had shown guests proudly.

Now he saw it differently.

“Take whatever equipment the research center needs.”

Mateo nodded.

“And the snakes?”

May you like

“All of them.”

For once Alejandro did not want to own what frightened other people.
