Chapter 15 - The Cost of Being Don AlejandroAlejandro’s title had become a joke among critics.

Don Alejandro.
The man who could end careers.
The man who never forgave.
He had cultivated it.
Now prosecutors used examples of past intimidation to establish context around his command to guards.
His attorneys objected to character evidence.
Some excluded.
Some admitted through witnesses where relevant.
Alejandro heard former employees describe him.
“Brilliant.”
“Terrifying.”
“Generous if loyal.”
“Merciless if not.”
One said:
“He could make you feel disagreement was betrayal.”
That line stayed.
Sofia had disagreed by withholding information.
Alejandro interpreted betrayal.
Diego hid mistakes because disagreement felt unsafe.
Employees stayed silent around Michael because he was Alejandro's chosen friend.
Power radiated beyond intended uses.
Alejandro had never ordered financial fraud.
But culture mattered.
He began selling minority stakes in businesses where control depended solely on him.
Boards gained authority.
Compliance office independent.
Some advisers called it overreaction.
Maybe.
But he was no longer interested in being indispensable.
Indispensability had been part of problem.
At his criminal hearing, prosecutors and defense reached provisional plea framework.
Alejandro would plead guilty to serious offense related to assault and unlawful restraint, accept custodial and supervised consequences, complete court-ordered programs, and have no contact with Sofia except by her consent during defined period.
His lawyer advised trial.
“We can argue no intent to cause physical injury.”
Alejandro answered:
“I intended fear.”
Silence.
“That matters.”
His lawyer said:
“You could lose years.”
“I almost made Sofia lose everything.”
Again, regret did not erase.
But responsibility changed negotiation.
Sofia was informed.
She did not celebrate.
She cried later.
Naomi asked:
“Why?”
“Because consequences make it real.”
It had always been real.
But wealth often makes consequences abstract until court date.
Sofia had loved Alejandro for seven years.
He had also harmed her.

Seeing him punished did not feel like winning.
That complexity did not make punishment wrong.
