Chapter 29 - The Last Recording

Three years after incident, legal retention period allowed Daniel to dispose personal duplicate footage while official case files remained where required.

He called Margaret.

“Ready?”

She came over.

Laptop on table.

Folder:

Kitchen Archive.

Daniel asked:

“Do you want to watch anything?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

He hovered over delete.

Margaret stopped him.

“Wait.”

Daniel looked.

She pointed to one clip.

Not abuse.

A recording from months before.

Robert alive.

Kitchen camera had captured him dancing badly with Vanessa while Margaret laughed from table and Daniel cooked.

None of them knew camera recorded.

Margaret stared.

“That was before he got really sick.”

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa spun Robert once.

He nearly fell.

Everyone laughed.

A family moment.

Real.

Margaret whispered:

“I forgot this.”

Daniel asked:

“Keep?”

She thought.

“Yes.”

They exported only that clip.

Then deleted their personal copies of abuse footage as permitted, leaving required legal archives outside their control.

Not erasing history.

Choosing what belonged in family memory.

Daniel saved dance clip in folder:

Dad — Kitchen 2023.

Margaret smiled.

“Not Vanessa?”

“She’s in it.”

“Yes.”

“No need pretend otherwise.”

Margaret nodded.

They closed laptop.

The tiny green light no longer existed in Daniel’s new kitchen.

But memory did.

Less controlling.

More integrated.

Margaret stood.

“I’m hungry.”

“Stay.”

“I have date.”

“With Frank?”

“No, lighthouse.”

Daniel laughed.

She left.

He watched through window as she drove herself away.

That image mattered more than floor.
