Chapter 26 - What Vanessa Returned

A package arrived for Margaret.

No sender initially.

Inside was navy cardigan.

The one she wore day of incident.

Margaret froze.

She thought garment lost during move.

A note from Vanessa:

I took this after you went upstairs that night because there was food on sleeve and I was afraid it would become evidence. I hid it in my storage box. I should have returned it years ago. I am sorry.

Margaret sat.

The cardigan carried no visible stain now.

Vanessa had washed it.

Why return?

Because hiding object was another act.

Margaret called Helen.

No legal need to preserve after case complete; evidence already documented.

She could keep, discard, donate.

Margaret asked Daniel to come.

He saw cardigan.

His face changed.

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know.”

“Burn?”

“No.”

“Throw away?”

“No.”

She touched fabric.

“This was Robert’s last Christmas gift.”

Daniel had forgotten.

That made garment complicated.

Vanessa’s abuse did not get to own entire history of cardigan.

Margaret washed it again herself.

Then wore it following week.

Daniel stared.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“It’s a sweater.”

Exactly.

Objects could be reclaimed.

Later she wrote Vanessa brief note through email.

I received it. Thank you for returning it.

Nothing else.

Vanessa answered:

Thank you for acknowledging.

Boundary.

Months later Daniel learned Vanessa worked for housing nonprofit.

Ironically related to Robert’s charitable goals.

He felt no need to interpret as redemption.

People changed jobs.

Maybe she was changing.

Maybe not.

Not his project.

Alder Park won design award.

Daniel brought Margaret and Erin to ceremony.

Margaret wore navy cardigan.

No one knew significance.

Good.

During dinner server dropped plate nearby.

Crash.

Margaret flinched.

Daniel noticed.

Did nothing.

After second:

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

They continued.

Later Margaret thanked him.

“For what?”

“Not making whole room notice.”

May you like

Daniel understood.

Care could be quiet.
