Chapter 28 - A New Table

Daniel replaced dining table in new house.
Not because old one linked to Vanessa.
Old one went with house sale.
He chose solid oak.
Margaret criticized price.
Erin loved it.
Frank said nothing because wise.
First large family dinner included Margaret, Frank, Erin, Daniel, two friends.
No hierarchy.
No seating tradition.
Margaret carried serving dish.
Daniel did not watch hands.
At some point Erin spilled wine.
Everyone laughed.
She cleaned.
No shame.
Margaret noticed ordinary reaction and became quiet.
Daniel saw.
Later:
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“That is family’s favorite lie.”
Margaret smiled.
“I was thinking how normal mess can be.”
Daniel nodded.
Dinner continued.
Margaret told embarrassing story about Daniel at ten.
Erin enjoyed too much.
Frank fell asleep after dessert.
Peace.
Not avoidance.
No hidden documents beneath plates.
After guests left, Daniel and Erin discussed future.
She wanted marriage eventually.
Daniel feared repeating.
Erin said:
“Then don’t marry fear.”
Annoying architect wisdom.
They moved slowly.
Margaret stayed out.
Mostly.
Vanessa sent no messages.
The silence felt appropriate.
Some relationships heal through distance.
Margaret’s legal-aid fund established permanent board without family control.
She served one term, then stepped down.
“Why?”
“I don’t need own thing forever because I started it.”
Daniel laughed.
“That lesson was expensive.”
“Yes.”
Robert would have struggled with that.
Maybe smiled too.
