Chapter 14 - Robert on Camera

The video was dated five months before Robert died.

Margaret found it on an old tablet.

Robert sat in Daniel’s office.

Thinner.

Pale.

Vanessa sat across from him.

Neither knew device camera was recording; Daniel had apparently left it running after video call.

Robert’s voice sounded weak.

“You’ve kept this place together.”

Vanessa said:

“Daniel has.”

“Daniel builds. You manage.”

“Margaret would disagree.”

Robert smiled.

“Margaret disagrees professionally.”

Vanessa laughed.

Then Robert became serious.

“I want you protected.”

“You already pay me.”

“I’m talking ownership.”

Daniel watched beside Margaret.

Robert continued:

“Ten percent may be too much. Five may be too little. I need Daniel involved.”

Vanessa asked:

“Why not decide now?”

“Because he’ll live with it.”

That mattered.

Robert was not gifting ten percent unconditionally.

He intended Daniel to participate.

Then Vanessa said:

“What if Margaret blocks everything?”

Robert looked tired.

“She will try.”

Margaret flinched beside Daniel.

Robert continued:

“Do not fight her in secret.”

Daniel stopped playback.

He looked at Margaret.

They both understood irony.

He resumed.

“Bring Daniel the numbers. Show him what you’ve done. Ask for structure. If he says no, then you decide whether you stay.”

Vanessa looked hurt.

“So I might get nothing.”

“You might.”

“After all these years?”

Robert nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked away.

Robert added:

“But leaving with integrity is worth more than owning something through resentment.”

Daniel closed eyes.

His father had actually given answer.

Not number.

Process.

Vanessa ignored it.

Margaret also ignored his expectation that Daniel decide.

Both seized pieces useful to them.

The recording ended.

Margaret whispered:

“I wish I had watched this before.”

“You had tablet.”

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel believed her.

Not every hidden thing was deliberate.

“Would it have changed you?”

Margaret thought.

“Maybe.”

Good.

Not certainty.

Daniel sent copy to lawyers.

It strengthened company position.

More importantly, it corrected family story.

Robert had not instructed Vanessa to take equity.

He had told her to ask.

He had not instructed Margaret to surrender control.

He had warned Vanessa against secret fighting.

Robert remained flawed.

But not responsible for choices made after.

That afternoon Daniel showed video to Vanessa through counsel.

She requested no response.

Later she texted Daniel, violating? Protective order applies Margaret, not Daniel. Still maybe legal communication direct okay but attorneys might prefer. She texted:

I remembered the conversation differently.

Daniel stared.

Memory.

People did not always falsify the past consciously.

Sometimes they edited it to survive themselves.

He replied:

I believe you. That doesn’t change what happened.

No more.

Police investigation advanced.

Laura Dean confirmed Vanessa used old notary stamp without permission.

Bank confirmed attempted POA.

Company records showed forged Daniel authorization.

Prosecutors reviewed potential charges.

Margaret struggled.

She wanted punishment.

Then felt guilty for wanting it.

Helen told her wanting consequences did not require choosing sentence.

Court would.

Margaret liked that.

Daniel filed divorce.

Vanessa did not contest separation.

Property negotiations became complicated due prenup but manageable.

House was Daniel’s separate premarital property? Let's make home acquired during marriage, so marital property. They agreed sell eventually.

Margaret objected.

“You love that house.”

Daniel looked around kitchen.

He no longer did.

Not because floors caused harm.

Because he had built too much identity around protecting place.

“I want a different one.”

“What about camera?”

“Comes with system.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“Good.”

He planned to sell after legal matters stabilized.

One evening he stood alone in kitchen.

Tiny green light blinked.

He replayed first recording.

Not all.

Just first minute.

Margaret dropped plate.

Vanessa approached.

Daniel stopped before humiliation.

He deleted nothing.

Evidence remained archived.

But he no longer needed to punish himself by watching.

The doorbell rang.

Margaret entered carrying grocery bag.

“I brought soup.”

“You live fifteen minutes away and still bring food.”

“Yes.”

She placed bowl on counter.

“Careful,” Daniel said jokingly.

Margaret looked at floor.

Then him.

For half second, both remembered.

Daniel regretted joke.

Margaret started laughing.

Unexpectedly.

Hard enough she had to hold counter.

Daniel joined.

Humor did not erase memory.

It reclaimed part of kitchen.

Then Margaret said:

“I want to tell you what I said to Vanessa before she put me on floor.”

Daniel became serious.

“What?”

“I told her Robert would be ashamed.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I also said something worse.”

Daniel waited.

“I told her you had never really loved her. That you married her because you were lonely after your first engagement ended.”

Daniel stared.

“Why would you say that?”

“To hurt her.”

There it was.

Margaret’s cruelty.

Not equivalent.

Still real.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“Tell her too.”

Margaret stiffened.

Then nodded.

“Eventually.”

Daniel was surprised.

May you like

Not because forgiveness was coming.

Because accountability no longer belonged only to one woman.
