Chapter 27 - Daniel’s Confession

Daniel eventually admitted something to Margaret.

“I almost deleted footage.”

She stared.

“When?”

“The first night.”

“Why?”

“I didn’t.”

“I heard.”

“But I thought about it.”

Margaret became still.

“Why?”

“Because I knew once copied, our marriage was over.”

The honesty hurt.

Daniel continued.

“For maybe five seconds, I wanted it not to exist.”

Margaret looked away.

He forced himself not to defend.

“Then I copied it.”

“Yes.”

“But thought matters.”

Margaret considered.

“Everyone has first thought.”

“I hated mine.”

“You chose second.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Does that make it okay?”

“No.”

She smiled faintly.

“See? I’m learning your annoying distinctions.”

He laughed.

Margaret asked:

“Would you have believed me without video?”

Daniel froze.

The hardest question.

He thought carefully.

“I hope so.”

“That is not answer.”

“No.”

He breathed.

“I don’t know.”

Margaret nodded.

That hurt.

But truth.

“I didn’t trust your complaints enough before.”

“No.”

“The video forced me.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I believe you.”

Not it’s okay.

Enough.

Then she confessed:

“I once hoped you would catch Vanessa being cruel.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“So I wouldn’t have to tell you.”

He understood shame.

No need explain.

Both had waited for truth to arrive externally.

Camera did.

But cameras could not replace courage forever.

They hugged.

Later Daniel told Erin this conversation.

She asked:

“What do you need from me when you avoid something?”

“Call me out.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It is.”

They laughed.

Daniel proposed? Maybe not needed. Could later.

Major conflicts largely resolved.

Vanessa financially.

Legally.

Margaret’s autonomy.

May you like

Daniel’s guilt.

Only final chapters emotional.
