Chapter 28 - The Dogs No Longer Turn

Years after first event, Mara entered training compound again.
Not announced.
She came to visit Lena’s research team.
Only eight dogs in yard.
None from Phase IV.
Young.
They glanced at Mara.
Then looked back at handlers.
No synchronized turn.
No guarding.
No recognition.
Mara stopped.
Lena watched.
“Disappointed?”
Mara smiled.
“Relieved.”
The system no longer carried her profile.
No dogs conditioned to see stranger as universal safety anchor.
They built safety with actual handlers.
One dog sniffed Mara during controlled greeting.
Then lost interest.
Perfect.
Ryan, older, said:
“Your superpower is gone.”
“Finally.”
Then Mara watched a handler use individual release cue.
Dog lay down.
No work followed.
Mara smiled.
That was better than forty-seven animals sitting in awe.
Because it belonged to relationship in front of her.
Then Ryan asked:
“Do you miss first day?”
“No.”
“Liar.”
“Maybe the look on your face.”
He laughed.
Then Mara walked past old Kennel Three.
Ventilation system replaced years ago.
No work order.
No broken sensor.
Everything changed.
Then she noticed a young maintenance worker replacing light.
Gray uniform.
Invisible to most.
Mara stopped.
“Need help?”
Worker looked.
“Are you authorized?”
Mara laughed.
“No.”
Then kept walking.
May you like
No special access.
Exactly right.
